It also says "Do not trust" I tried to click on it and tell it to block this computer but it doesn't seem to respond. Nothing changes, the warning screen just goes opaque then we can't choose anything... The warning comes automatically every 2 or 3 hours. How do we secure our network?

Setting the login pasword does not stop others from using your Internet. You need to set the Wireless Security in your router.

As I'm not familiar with your router I am just going to tell you the
basics. If you are having a hard time, it won't take long to look
them. Routers are nearly all the same with the menus being the big

Log onto your your router. Find Wireless Security. Enable WEP. It may ask for security mode so select WEP. In WEP Encryption select 64 bit (10 hex digits). Let it generate new keys. Copy down the ten digits from KEY 1. Remeber to save the settings.

Slight lesson because numbers and letter confuse people. Every day we use the base 10 numeric system-decimal. Computer work in binary meaning 2 digits, 0 and 1. Because the length of a 2 digit system is so long, groups of four digits are coded together to form the hexidecimal system, meaning 16 digits. But you ask, that is 0-15. The numbers 10-15 are replaced by A, B, C, D, E F. Get it??? Yeah, it is confusing but that's true computer "speak".

Anyway, you go into the Network Connection section of Control Panels. Right click the network adapter your using, and select properties. Click the Wireless Networks tab. Make sure the Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings box has a check in it. Now look under Preferred Networks and you should see you wireless network. Highlite it the click Properties just below. A new small window opens. It should default to the Association tab. The Network Authentication should be set to OPEN. Set Data Encryption to WEP. In Network Key enter the digits you copied from the router. Enter a second time if asked. Click OK and your set.

What other people might tell you. WEP is the old standard of encryption and will suggest using WPA instead. The problem with this WPA is not availble on most computers. Did you notice when I had you select WEP in the Association tab there was only Disable or WEP. This is why you don't use WPA. And ignore people if they say go to 128 bit encryption instead of the 64 I had you use, it is not neccessary. All you are trying to do is prevent others from using your private Internet Connection. There is no Top Secret data on your computer. What I had you do is easy and simple and is prenty of protect from neighbors. My setup is exactly as your will be.

    Good Luck....

If you need me, I check regularly...

I have an unsecured Linksys wireless set up installed. How can I go back and make it secure?

Hi jenkinsbebeg,

There's a possibilty that you will get an unstable connection due to unsecured Linksys setup. Poeple around you can pick up your network easily and could eat up your bandwith. So it is highly recommended to set up a security on your router. There are several options on how to set up or configure your router. You can use the setup wizard or by opening your web browser.

Here are some steps on how to set up your router using your web browser:

1. Open your web browser ( Internet Explorer, Mozilla ).

2. Now enter the the following URL:

3. Enter your Username and Password.

common username and password for linksys:
--> username blank, password "admin"
--> username "admin", password blank
--> username "admin", password "admin"

4. You need to connect to the internet then click "internet setup".

5. From the drop down menu select DHCP for cable modems, and for DSL modems please select "PPPOE".

6. Now set the SSID (Service Set Identifier) to identify your network name. You could also change the password from here.

7. At this point you can encrypt your wireless connection using the WEP ( Wireless Encryption Protocol ) or WPA. If you will be using the WEP just go under " wireless security" option, then enter your preferred password (passphrase) then click on "generate".

From here you should now be able to connect to your router using your preferred password.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Wireless won't connect to the internet when in WPA TPIP mode

I have found that some routers do not like text and numbers mixed in the password. After having a ton of problems I set up the wireless password to all numbers and haven't had a problem since.

Prior to that the wireless would work for a day or so and then quit. It was frustrating.

Also, when the router calls for text or hexadecimal I have found that they really don't mean text unless it is between A to F, which isn't really text but a hexadecimal number.

So, take the simple approach. Put in all 5's for your password. You can change it later if everything works, but use all 5's just to see if you can get going.

Don't read this part if you already know this.... You have to connect a computer via a hardwire ethernet cable to the router to set the password encryption. I used as the IP address to get to the modem. Put the IP address in your browser address bar and you should come up with a screen that is addressing the modem. Select wireless security or some similar sounding menu item and then make your selections.

After you do this, and before you disconnect the ethernet cable, try to get on to the internet using the hard wired ethernet cable. That will be bypassing the wireless routines. If you can't get on via the ethernet cable direct connection, it is unlikely that you will be able to make the wireless work because there is a problem downstream from your computer -- the modem or perhaps the connection at the street.

Once done you can remove the ethernet cable from your computer. Go to NETWORK CONNECTIONS and properties and set the identical parameters WPA, etc in the properties including the all 5's password.

If you have set the wireless to connect automatically it should connect to the internet.

good luck

Wireless internet connection

Hi, to connect to wireless you need to access your wireless router, by connecting it with a cable and access router control panel.

To access router control panel you need to type router IP number on Internet Explorer bar, once the router is connected, then enter user ID and Password.

Once you are in router control panel go to wireless settings and set up your wireless.

You find router IP and user/password on the router manual, follow instructions on route user manual to connect to router control panel.

If you need more help you can call the support number listed on the router manual, or get a chat on Fixya.

Network Key

Connect your PC to your router via a ethernet able, fro, the LAN ports to the machine. Reboot the router, wait 2 min, and boot up your machine.
Go to STARTt>RUN>type in CMD. Press Enter. In the black bix that opens, type ICONIFG.
Look for your IP Address. It should be (X can be any number up to 254.) Subnet should be Gateway IP should be 192.168.x.1.
If your IP address is, you are not connecting to your router. Put the Gateway Ip into your IE address bar. That should open a window that asks for your username and password. Put those in and go to the Security area, or tab. It should show your key there, and what security mode it is using, such as WEP, WPA, etc. There you can see what it is, or change it. Let everyone else using the router know about the change.
Good luck!

Cannot connect my lap tp to the internet via my d link router on my desk top

Please indicate which is your issue.

Is your issue with the router's administrative password to used to configure the router?

Please confirm your router's manufacturer and model number.

IF not go to Wireless Configuration

If the router needs to be reset (because of an unknown password) do you know the proper settings to reconfigure the router? If not or even if unsure please provide your Internet Service Provider's name so we can get accurate instructions before proceeding any further on this password issue.

Wireless Configuration

Is your issue with the passphrase/password for a wireless adapter to access a secured wireless network using either WEP or WAP encryption?

Do you have another wireless computer that works? -- you may be able to find the passphrase in the configuration of that machine's wireless adapter avoiding the need to have the administrators password for the router for the time being.

Cant connect

Hi purplegarion,

hook up the router per instruction in manual and your particular internet connection.  With the Di524 powered up, use the end of a paperclip to depress the reset button located in a little hole beside the power connection.   open internet explorer and type in and press enter.  The password is admin. once th screen appears, click on Wizard.  Follow the wizards directions carefully.

For simplicity of security click on the wireless button while in the  wireless screen.  Set radio to on.  Enter a SSID like purplegarion. Set to open system.  Set Security to WEP.  Wep to HEX.  64bit.  Enter into Key one a 10 digit number you can remember like 1234567890.  Click apply.  Change your password to a personal password other than ADMIN.

Any device that attaches will need to enter the WEP 64 Bit hex Security key 1234567890, or whatever 10 digit number you put in the router.

Internet connection will require powering down you modem, and the DI-524 router.  power up the modem first and let it go through the start up, then power up thte DI 524.  you may need to make sure your DHCP is set to Automatically assign an IP address.
