Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Maytag Dependable care washer, approximately 15 years old, runs fine but no longer pumps out the water. I just took the pump out and it turns just fine and I don't see any clogs or kinks in the hoses. When it runs and reaches the pumping cycle, it sounds like it wants to pump (there's a humming) but nothing happens. Should I replace the pump, the belt, both...or is this an electrical problem with the motor and cycle itself?

    Hi,

Thanks for the ideas, but I don't think we're talking about the same kind of machine. My washer is model number LAT9334AAE. The pump itself is a sealed, translucent plastic with two hose connectors, one in and one out. (Picture attached) I don't see a drain filter. and the hoses are not clogged, as confirmed by blowing through them (yuck).

I'll give this a shot. If it's the belt (I'm hopeful, but it looks ok to me) then great, but if it's the motor, I'll just opt for a new machine.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. There is a drain filter connected with the drain pump. It usually gets clogged, and needs to be cleaned every 6-8 months or so. You can access the drain filter by removing the front kick panel. It would be a small white filter connected to drain pump with a hose. Also make sure that the drain hose is not clogged.
If you are still not able to troubleshoot the issue then i'll suggest you to check for the drain pump connections and also for the control board connections, as it can a control board issue as well.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

    Hi

Please see part #28 (drain pump). The belt is loose or worn out, if not then it is due to motor connections and you'll need to check the voltage on the terminals of the motor using a multimeter.

Please see this picture for details--

Overloaded washer, smelled burning. Washer works

On this machine, you most likely just burned the drive belt. The old dependable care transmission design was pretty hard to kill, so just get yourself a new set of drive belts. Very easy to replace/install. You can just tip the machine back to access them. There is a lip on the bottom of the front panel that will hide the pump belt but enough room above it to unwind it off the pulleys. If you want, the front panel can be removed, early models used two phillips head screws to hold the front on or later versions used two clips on the bottom that you can release with a putty knife. Pull the bottom of the front panel forward to un-clip the top and away you go.
Good luck!

My Maytag washer is about 15 years old. Suddenly

Without a model number, but with the age, I can only assume that this is a Dependable Drive wash system.

This system utilizes a drive belt and a pump belt and it is recommended they be replaced together after every13 years of normal use. They are very simple to install with no teardown or tools needed. The belts have installation instructions printed on the package.

1. Drive Belt

2. Pump Belt

The pump belt must be adjusted to the tension requirements written on the package. See link below.

Other issues could also cause the same symptoms but the belts at this age is the 1st suspect.

Should I buy a gently used Maytag dependable care plus model# LAT8824AAE washer? What's the reliability of this machine?

Maytag makes very dependable machines. They are fairly easy to repair and parts are easy to find. If I was in the market for a used washer, a Maytag would be my first choice. Since its used there is no guaranty that the thing isn't going to need repairs. If you can see it run through a cycle before buying it would be a plus. My first washer was a mid seventies model Maytag. I had two minor repairs twice in 15 years and its been working ever since at my buddy's. I hope this helps you.

Washer leaking when filling up tub

Unlikely to be pump, sounds more like hose leaking, or drum seal.
Depending upon severity of leak, place a sheet of newspaper under front of m/c, pushing it as far back as you can. switch m/c on for a few secs, then switch off, remove paper and you should be able to judge where leak is.
Tilt m/c back and have a look underneath.
At 12 years old, if it looks major, I think I would replace m/c.
Plz rate my solution.
Thanks.

Start by checking the belt by tilting the machine back and examining for wear, glazing and cracks, next pull the belt to make sure everything turns. Post back if this looks fine.

Washer not spinning and draining water

I just had a similar problem. I broke down and had a repair man come out to take a look. He pulled off the front lower cover, took off the inlet hose on the water pump, and found my two year old daughters sock stuck in the turbine of the water pump. The motor runs both the drum and the pump, therfore it would not spin, and would not let the water drain.

Everything was fine until tonight. I'm having the same problem again. I pulled everything off just like my repair man did, but no sock. I think I might wind up pulling off the whole pump to check the otlet side.

Anyone else have any suggestions?
