In my experience, generally speaking, the cartridges need to be 'not empty'. (Poor grammar, I know) Black, for example, is not always ONLY black. Black may be the basis for the color but not the only color used to make black or other colors, generally speaking.
Some printers I have will continue to print with empty cartridges (nothing I would share with others) and others simply refuse to work until I replace the cartridges.
As to your unasked question, 'can I fill these cartridges myself?'
I have never had success with filling cartridges. In fact, I have ruined several expensive printers by refilling the cartridges with third party ink. Someone will come behind me and say they NEVER use branded ink, they always use the third party ink and have never had a problem.
When I buried my last printer that died due to 'lethal ink', I decided that ink didn't really cost that much when I needed the printer on a Sunday night to print the paper that was due on Monday morning.
