Hi.

If there is no power at all, then it is either the power cord or power board inside the TV.

If after the fault the TV went in standby and does not wake up, then the TV has on protect mode after detecting a fault.
When this happens higher voltages are shut down to prevent further damage.

Try first leaving the TV power cord unplugged for some times, let say one hour or so.

Also ensure that the fault is not coming from a faulty receiver box sending bad signal, check if you get same problem with no receiver box or dvd connected.

If that does not work, and you keep having a flashing led on front of the TV, and tv turning off by itself after a while, that indicates a fault condition.

The flashing light indicates a diagnostic state called protection.
When the TV goes on protection there are only two possible reasons.

1The internal circuits are jammed because of electrostatic charges accumulating on capacitors, or because of a wrong voltage read by the main chip on your monitor controller board. this started the protection circuit.

2 The protection circuit detected a wrong voltage or abroken contact, identified an internal fault and kicked in , startingthe flashing light.

If you are in situation one, then theTV will reset just unplugging power cord for one or two hours, sometimes even minutes.

If you are in situation 2 , then there is an internal fault.

Common faults that can occur are a blown capacitor on power board, a convergence IC has blown, or a fault on Digital board.
On rear projection, the ballast board that supplies power to lamp or CRT is also commonly failing.

If under warranty contact the manufacturer ringing the number on the user manual

    Hi Mike.

If the screen is flashing , then the unit is not on protect mode, but obviously there is a fault the same.

A faulty sustain board can cause the display to flash, but also a main digital board, or an insufficient High Voltage to plasma panel can cause similar problems.

I think that the best thing to do would be calling Philips and telling them same things you said here to me. Pointing out that the TV has never been used improperly, and that fault must depend on a factory defect.
Ask them if it is possible to purchase an extended service plan (extended warranty). In case you will get one or more extra warranty years. Price for cover extension is about $80 a year. You can purchase from one to three years if they have a warranty extended plan that applies to your conditions.

If that does not work, then get a technician to test Ysus Zsus sustain board, power board, then eventually low buffer board and main digital board.

    Regards.

42" philips plasma, black screen and flashing red light

This fix was posted on similar problem, worthy of repeating: Replaced 3300mf 10V capacitors at PS. Both had bulged slightly. Upsized to 25V as the previous solution poster had suggested 16V but I could not locate 16V so used 25V and TV is back to normal!

Check the power board for capacitors with the tops bulged up. They are 3300uf 10v. There are either 2 or 4 of them depending on your set.
