No, that's not required. Open "My Computer" and then right click on it to find the hard drives listed. If it shows up THERE, and isn't showing when you first plug the USB in, then there's nothing wrong other than the computer just isn't recognizing it as Booted to, or as an external hard drive.

The fault sounds like a power supply problem. The USB port on your computer supplies up to a max. 500MA and this may not be sufficient for the external hard drive to work properly. I suggest you get a new AC power adapter for this drive.
1. you have a bad power adapter or the electronic controller board in the hard drive case has malfunctioned. 2. You should call the manufacturer for a replacement power adapter or go to the local computer store and purchase a new case for the hard drive.
The hard disk or the adapter case maybe faulty.
To test the hard disk, remove it form the Iomega case and connect it to an USB hard disk adapter and plug it into a computer's USB port.
If this computer see it as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files then the hard disk is OK, then the Iomega adapter case is faulty.
Then you need a new hard drive adapter case, it doesn't need to be an Iomega brand.

Do you have access to a multimeter or voltmeter? If you do you can check the voltage coming out of the adapter and make sure it matches what the power adapter says it is. If it doesn't, then it is the power adapter. If it does, then it is the drive or enclosure.
