The carriage keeps going back full force

I have a manual portable SperryRand Remington. I have owned the machine for 20 years and just took it out of retirement! The carriage keeps going back full force to the left and will not stay in the writing position. Is there a screw/spring that needs adjusting/replacing? I am ok with things mechanical.

Check that the carriage release levers have freedom are are not binding. Also the tab key and linkage, next the space bar mechanism. From under machine observe the escapement wheel, rocker and the escapement pawls (fixed dog and loose dog). Lubricate with 10 weight . oil only no WD 40). The loose dog is the part that holds the carriage in position by holding the tooth on the escapement whee wheel assembly. GOOD LUCK

How to unlock electric type writer?

Christine: According to VintageTypewritterShoppe.com: "Underwood portables have a simple carriage catch on the left side right below the carriage. Move the carriage to the right a few inches to disengage. Remington portables have two systems. Early portables require the sliding out of the platen shaft/knob on the right end of the carriage. The lock lever is located on the left end of the carriage and is spooned against the left side carriage release lever. Newer Remington's(Model 5/Streamliner/Deluxe) have a small lever on the left end of the carriage located in the same spot as the earlier models. There is a little ball on top of the lever. Push the lever to the rear to disengage the lock."

Keeps saying icefill but no ice

I searched forever for an answer to this and never found one. So this is what I did when you take the cover off on the left hand side there are two switches with two wires coming from.each switch. Then in the same group of wires the is two slightly larger wires one red one black. Those wires go to the optic eye that tells the machine is full. Cut and splice these teo wires together coming from the circuit board this will tell the machine it is empty and should make ice. Worked for me. It just doesn't cut off on its own whenever its full.

Carriage jam message

I had this same problem and spend hours working on it. Took the side panels apart to get a better look. Nothing anyone said fixed the issue. Not even the link everyone keeps posting to HP's carriage jam fix. Was out of solutions and about to give up and order a new printer. There was one last thing I had to try that I didn't think was going to work, but I had a theory. Right after I tested this solution it started working again. This worked for me, but anyone who has tried every and have not got their printer to work can try it.

My Solution: Open the front covers and look inside. Just above the metal rail that the carriage travels on there is a thin plastic strip about 1/4 in. width and should have a glossy shine to it. I believe this is some kind of positioner. It runs through the carriage and gives it some kind of position. After years of use, it'll become dirty with ink. I used some tissue and alcohol and wiped the strip clean. It worked perfectly fine right after. Below is a picture of the strip I underlined with a yellow line.

Can't put a VHS in

If the VHS isnt going in it may require a little force as the track might have gotten stuck with dust. if you think its something else i suggest you openj it up and see if these is anything logged in the carriage way or if the tray might just be stuck. once it is open simply insertthe vhs tape and keep pressing in on it until the machine takes it in. while pressing keep you eye on the carriage and see hwat might be stuck as to preven the tape from entering. BUT I THINK IT MIGHT JUST REQUIRE A LITTLE FORCE as it may be binded with lack of use

sorry its not a great pic but the(ubs) USB ports are nearly always on the left or right side of any toshiba note book. im guessing you inherited the laptop or were forced to try and keep up with the new world and made the mind numbing leap into the unknown where every gadget you own is already in a portable time machine leaving you with now useles cd's that you refuse to get rid of because it took you years to compile your collection, and if you do get rid of it your then left with the problem of finding something else to put on the shelf in their place! lol life sucks.lol

Tape "was" stuck and now it's worse

What may have happened is, that in the process of forced removal, gear timing has been fouled up, assuming the cassette carriage is gear driven. Proper gear positioning is critical, and if it is off by one or more teeth, it won't load the tape properly. Often, there are marks or pointers on the gears which must be lined up, in a particular mode, as specified in manufacturer service literature. If there are gear teeth broken, or cracked gears, then they must be replaced. Servicing in such a case is questionable, as VCRs of the past 10+ years are poorly made, prone to break, disposable. Early units, like back in the '80s, were much higher quality, especially mechanically. Unless this is a high $$ rig, you will probably be better off trashing it, and purchasing something else.
