Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My computer started up normally, then nothing.

My computer started up normally, but when it came to the desktop, that's all I have. I have no start menu, no icons. I accessed the internet through the task manager. My computer is older, but I don't know if I have a virus that has taken everything down or what. A couple months ago I did have Avast antivirus. At some point Avast was taken down by something and I couldn't repair or reload it. It kept saying trojan alert, but was unable to get rid of it. I really need my computer. I have a daycare and all of my business records for the past year are on it. I need to rescue it as soon as possible. Please and Thank you!

Hi,

It sounds like you have a virus riddled computer as well as no Anti virus protection either.

Try and get your desktop back this way >>>>>

Start task manager, in the top right hand corner of the window you will see File, click on that. Where it say's new task (Run), click on that and type in the box explorer and then hit the enter key.

Hopefully your desktop icons and task bar will return.

If they do return you will need to obtain some anti virus software.

You can get AVG 9 Free here >>>>>>>>

http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?part=dl-10044820&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlPid=11014801

Download and install this excellent free software and then perform a deep scan of the system for any and all viruses, malware and spyware.

If you can't get the desktop icons to return post back here straight away and tell me what operating system you are using, like XP, Win 2000/98 for example.

Good luck.

When I start Dell Optiplex 330 only the orange ligt of the start button blinks and nothing else is working. I tried removing the memory (RAM) clean and replace still it is the same.

This is usually an indication of a failed motherboard. This is similar to the Dell 745 at my work, that had the same problem. After running all of the normal tests, I found the problem to be the motherboard.

Miko tim4, operating system won't start easily, needs 80% of the time power cut to reboot, after the 2nd or 3rd time it starts normally...any ideas ?

In this case I would take and restart it a couple times. Or, if you wait and not click or anything, it might work. You could also lose all your data and unplug the main power cord(leading to your main pc box) for 5 minutes. This will delete all the users on your computer. I would only do this if nothing else works or you have nothing on your computer you want to save.

Computer turns on and fan starts running, but the monitor has nothing on it. All the cords are pluged in.

unplug monitor power cord wait for 5 minutes then turn computer off and re hook up monitor and computer if the moniter does not come on then yo have a defective video card, but you can test it with another monitor to be sure. normally if the monitor was bad it would say no signal.

When i turn my computer on it says it is on save mode and to hit any key but when i do nothing happens.

You probably mean "Safe Mode" -- it is a restricted-functionality version of Windows, designed to be used when trouble-shooting because Windows will not start normally.

Press the SPACE bar, or click on the 'OK'.

But, the big question is why is Windows starting in "Safe Mode"?
Just shutdown, and restart, and see if it will restart in "Normal" mode.

Computer will not boot up. I have tried to boot up in safe mode, normal, safe mode with prompt command...nothing works, just goes back to the normal start up screen and keeps doing the normal start up over...

It looks like you're encountering an endless reboot? Here's what to do to find the actual error message.

  1. Turn on the computer, and press F8 after the POST screen but before Windows attempts to start to access the advanced startup options.
  2. Select "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure" and press Enter.
You should now get a blue screen with an error message and error codes. Please write these codes down and report back.
