My 1999 TX18 Amana Top Freezer/ Fridge won't get cold. I cleaned it, plugged it in. The light and fan work and it stayed cold for 4 days but it won't get cold.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Freezer works....fridge doesn't

Hi,

Your refrigerator gets its cold air from the freezer by way of a fan that transfers air past the freezer coils to the refrigerator. If the fan isn't working the refrigerator will not get cold. I your coils in the freezer are freezing up this will also stop the flow of air to the refrigerator. The first thing to check is the fan.

Most refrigerator/ freezers are only controlled by one compressor (unless its a very expensive model). So if one is cold and the other isn't it's normally a simple problem.
First, check the temperature knob dials. Then check the seal using the dollar bill test or flash light test (described in link below).

You can also unplug the unit for at around twenty-four hours to clear blocked vents. Be sure to place some towels around the unit and prop all the doors open.
Defrosting your fridge should clear up any blockage in the duct as water and gunk often clog up the ducts. While you are at it clean the coils and the inside of your fridge and freezer.

Have kenmore refig model 59671103101 refrig temperature to low. light work, fans run freezer works good. Cleaned vents & coils ?

if the freezer is fine, check for air flow to fridge. if you get none, see if there is any frost on the back wall of the freezer. if there is some frost, the coils are iced up and need thawing. if there is no frost, there may be an obstruction in the vent. also may be thermostat in fridge- it opens and closes the vent from the freezer.

My kenmore frig is not staying cold in frig. or freezer

One of the most common problems with refrigerators and freezers is over time dust and lint can accumulate in the condenser coils try cleaning the coils CAREFULLY! with a vacuum. Unplug the unit before doing any cleaning . most units have a cardboard cover in the back, remove this to get at the coils . also check the fan(if there is one ) to see that it is not stuck.replace cover and plug unit back in.
check to see if fan is running and for air movement under the front door of unit. Keep in mind all models are different and these solutions are generic ones .Hope this helps.

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.

Cold freezer/warm refrigerator

Same problem with Frigidaire Gallery model#GLRT182SAW5 (dated 2002 on back of case)

Vents were blocked with ice. Vents (from top compartment to lower) located behind light. You can check by poking a chopstick up the (2) holes; be careful not to hit fan blades.

Solution:

- took freezer coil cover off in back; checked that defrost heater element was working (marked and rotated the timer in the hole next to light); checked that fan working. Found ice in the vents and defrost drip area. Got it out with hair dryer.

- cleaned compressor coils in back (check fan is rotating; also tweaked some of the compressor tubing bends to make them more smooth - read somewhere about a manufacturing defect ...); blew out drip tube from defroster while down there.

- Set the freezer control to WARM and the refrig control to COLD (THIS SHOULD IMPROVE AIR FLOW FROM TOP TO BOTTOM).

- Put thermometers in top and bottom. Checked that refrigerator cycles (not running continuously). Checked that cold air is coming down from (2) vents behind light.

OK: so far, so good. Lower compartment is 40 or under. Top is under 18.

CONCLUSION: Suspect marginal design. Had problems with another similar model where defroster ice doesn't drain correctly, pools and refreezes. Leading to blocked vents as well as blocked defroster drain and similar problem including dripping water from top to bottom and warm bottom.

MAYBE KEEPING THE FREEZER CONTROL AT WARM GETS AROUND THE PROBLEM?? ANYWAY, ITS WORKING FOR ME FOR NOW !!
