Question about Sony KP-61XBR48 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Our Kp-61xbr48 is 12 years old. Sound but no picture.

Our Kp-61xbr48 is 12 years old. We bought it new. Now it turns on fine but after a few minutes (the amount of time is different every time) the picture fades and goes to black but there is still sound. What part do I need to replace, how much is the part and where can I get the part. Thank you very much.

Hello and thank you for your response. However not sure about one thing. Should there be a corona or northern lights look to the back side of the picture tube normally when it is clean or just when there is too much dust. In other words if there is this northern lights effect, does that mean it is dusty or there is another problem?

Hi,

When the screen goes totally dark it is from a loss of high voltage.

The symptoms you describe are common in these television. The loss of high voltage can be from a leakable path around the picture tube caused by dust and dirt; it can be caused by a weak flyback transformer that gives out after a long warm up; it can be from an overheated output transistor in the horizontal output stage; and others.

The fact that is occasionally comes back on would tend to indicate the problem may be from too much dust and dirt around the picture tube; hence somewhat dependent on humidity and environmental factors.

You might be able to try cleaning inside the set to see if that will cut down on the leakage problem. Maybe the best thing to do is this: At night, in a very dark room, turn on the set and look through the cracks in the back to see if there is corona discharging from around the back side of the picture tube. It should be a glowing like the northern lights inside the set. If so, let me know and I will give you instructions on how to get inside and clean off the dirt around the high voltage parts. But don't do it without careful instructions as the high voltage can stay around for hours after the set is turned off. (35,000 volts is typical of a set your size.)

Please leave me comment, if you need further assistance

It you see the light normally, when it is clean...

You can clean when the light completely goes away, ie when the voltage completely discharged

Electrolitic capacitors are the demise of most electronics over the long term. Most last 10 years reliabley. Your tv has approximately 150 of them and is fourteen years old. I would use an esr meter to check for bad ones in the main power supply. If you need a power supply board your estimate for a in home service call is about 450$ plus tax for P&L. by the major players.
