Question about U.S. Robotics (005686-02) (00568602) Modem

1 Answer

I'm looking for more information about the modem negociation sequence during a connect. I have two USR 56k external modems that attempt to connect, but ultimately fail after doing a very long series of whistles back and forth with the host. Any ideas of what the problem might be? I have two functional modems, and two that fail. Wondering what the whistles mean to understand what its doing. Anyone know a reference on this?

Made unsuccessful attempts to connect to the Internet using the dial-up modem. The internal modem came installed on my original PC and is a Smart Link 56k Modem. What do I do?

Can we have more information about the problem you have when attempting to connect ? The error code and message would me very useful in your case.

For example :
1. If it says the modem is already in use, go to "Network connections" or "Network and sharing center" and delete all existing dial-up connections, then create a new one based on the settings your internet provider gave you.

2. It might be a problem with the login and password. Write both in Notepad on the computer, then copy and paste the information in the required fields in the connection window.

3. It might also be a problem on the telephone line. Try another computer with dial-up modem known to work properly. If the problem repeats on that computer, the problem is on the telephone line. You will need to contact your provider to fix the problem.

My 2003 server sees the modem v.92 fax, but i can not seem to use it. I tryed to reset it, powered off and back on, reinitialized it but nothing seems to work.

A lightning strike to the phone line can kill the line interface while the computer interface is still ok. This would produce the symptoms you describe. If you can open the modem, look around the phone line connector for burnt components or burning on the board.

This might also stop the phone line from working when the modem is connected, ie another phone on the same line will produce no dial tone with themodem connected.

If this is the case a new modem will be the cheapest way out of this.

Does anyone have the full set of AT inits tu use with winfax pro 10 and a USR courier V everything modem ? That would be great help as the software is not supported anymore by symantec.

WnFax PRO will automatically detect USR chipset and use the preferred init string for the modem. There isn't really a list of init strings to use.

Modem

You want a 56K modem at least. Modems are becoming less common these days as brpadband (DSL/Cable/WiFi,etc) are becoming more cost effective.

Does your computer take PCI cards? If so, you might be able to find a PCI modem. There are also some serial modems still being sold. If your computer has 9 pin serial ports, you could try to use a serial modem. I think there also might be a USB modem that you could use, providing your PC has serial ports.
