Question about Universal Electronics UEI UET79R 75VA Control Transformer Pri: 120/208/240/480VAC Sec: 24VAC UPS System

Safety fuse trips in my 75VA control transformer

My geothermal heat pump has a 75VA control transformer. This transformer trips the safety fuse the moment the 24V control board is supposed to start the compressor. It does this by giving 24V to the compressor contactor. Any ideas what could be the reason for this? The transformer itself seems to be fine as it gives a steady 24V. Could there be a problem with the contactor that causes this?

Yes, the contactor OR the wiring to it could have a problem. The transient suppression diode that might be associated with the contactor driver could also be shorted.

An ohmmeter is your friend in troubleshooting this.

The difference between thermal fuse and thermostat


Thermal fuse is a heat-sensitive safety feature that shuts down system when overheating is detected.
In electrical wiring, the thermal fuse reacts to high temperature caused by too many amps on the electric circuit. When temperature exceeds the fuse amp rating, then the fuse trips and cuts power to electric circuit.
Example of thermal fuse is a household circuit breaker.
Gas water heaters have a different type of thermal fuse located in the combustion chamber or on the combustion chamber door, and also inside a copper probe inside water tank. Water heater thermal fuses will trip when water temperature exceeds fuse rating, or when heat inside the combustion chamber exceeds temperature rating of fuse. This action will cut off gas supply to water heater.
So a thermal fuse is a safety feature.

Thermostat is not a safety feature.
Thermostat is a measuring tool.
Thermostats measure temperature.
Example of thermostat is outdoor thermometer, or cooking thermometer, or Heat-AC control located on wall inside house.
Thermostats can give a simple temperature reading, or they can cause a separate control to turn on-off depending on application.
For example thermostat on Heat-AC will read room temperature, and when temperature exceeds setting, this triggers a switch that turns Heat-AC on-off.

Many appliances have both thermal safety fuse and thermostat.
Take for example a gas water heater. A copper tube extends into the water tank. Inside the copper tube are 2 things: A thermostat probe to measure water temperature, and a thermal fuse called an ECO for energy cut off. The ECO is a thermal fuse, and is a safety feature.

The thermostat reads temperature of water, and turns water heater on-off to keep water hot. A person can adjust water temperature by adjusting the thermostat dial on front of water heater.
However if the thermostat fails, or some other problem occurs, and water inside the tank gets hotter than 180 degrees, then the ECO or thermal fuse will trip. When the thermal fuse trips, this turns off gas to the water heater so water cannot get any hotter. The safety device prevents water heater explosion. The water heater must be repaired since this particular thermal fuse cannot be re-used afterwards, and must be replaced.

Intertherm model# FEH-015HA It is no longer blowing heat


High limit safety device is probably tripped, it should reset automatically, also check other safety's for tripped condition, they look like small round device located in a variety locations through out the unit with two wires to each one, some have small push button resets located in the burner compartment area. If all the safety's are reset and check out OK the main control board may need replaced. One of the most common causes of high limit safety device trip is lack of air flow, Dirty filters, evaporator coils, malfunctioning blowers, closed supply air registers etc.
Note: High limit safety switches also go bad after being tripped to many times.

Does not heat


Try resetting your circuit breaker. Look for lint buildup in your vent and your lint filter housing. If you see excess lint you might have a tripped safety or a blown duct fuse. Get a cheap meter and check each of the safety components and the air temp control stats for continuity. Check the heating element. If all of those check good then check the timer. If the timer is ok then power from the wall might not be there for heat. The motor works on 120 volts but the element needs 240 volts on electric models. On gas models your flame sensor, ignitor, or solenoid coils are suspect as well as the limits and safetys just as on an electric model. More here

I have a Jandy Aqualink RS system. The wires for one of the valve activators was shorted and the outdoor control panel and the indoor control panel lost power. None of the circuit breakers was tripped.


On the RS system there is a small fuse on the back of the circuit board. That may have been burnt. It acts as a safety for the transformer. Make sure ALL of the power is off, then check that fuse. Do not keep the shorted valve actuator plugged in. Replace it, or leave it disconnected. Then replace the fuse. Then re-apply power to the unit. Otherwise your transformer may go out next. If the fuse is not burnt, which would surprise me, you may have a burnt transformer.

Dryer heat is no longer working. Can you take me through troubleshooting what it could be?


Unplug the dryer
Look for signs of a distressed dryer and correct that. If you do find a clogged vent pipe it may not be a heating element is needed, it could be a tripped safety. The heating chamber where the element is housed has 2 safety limits. One is rated for 250f and the other up above and smaller is rated for 300f. If the filter chute is clogged this smaller 300f limit tends to trip however the 350f fuse mounted on the blower housing will not melt. If the vent going outside is totally clogged and the filter is full of lint then the fuse will indeed melt and kill power to the door circuit. Yours is working but has no heat so the thermal fuse is not blown. All components on the backsides should show a continuity reading with the exception of the control thermostat's smaller terminals which house a delicate tiny little heater inside the control that warms up the control slightly so it will shut down faster. That is how we get delicates, knit, a perma press cycles.

Pretty good clean up I oiled the wheels and idler with zoomspout oil because it is safe for dryers

I have a Samsung microwave model SMH7177STE/BE. Will only heat a few minutes before and shut off, now there is no heat. I am a licensed elect. but no experience with microwaves and having difficulty...


Its tripping a high limit most likely. Be careful there is 2100 to 4000 volt high side with a capacitor if its not an inverter. The standard components consist of noise board, fuse, touch panel and power controller, high limits, door switches, whipper motor, fan, transformer, capacitor, transformer, magnetron, diode, plate rotator.
Discharge cap (for safety and further testing).. Test fuse; if fuse tests blown test door switches first. Test limits. Check amp draw with slow blow fuse; open door to stop unit and again discharge capacitor. Test resistance to ground on whipper, fan, magnetron, light. Test resistance lead to lead (measurable on motors/coils/magnetron). Test capacitor in ferrads, compare to spec on print. Check diode forward and reverse. Test output voltage from power control board to transformer. Test transformer coils.
Best of luck and play safe; dont test voltage output from the transformer, voltage at capacitor or magnetron.

Vogelzang kerosene heater will not ignite (no spark)


There is an igniter module and then the igniter electrodes (check the air gap) that produces the spark to start the fuel burning, both could be defective.

Heat not blowing on heat cycle


Have to know what kind of heat it is, Gas, Electric or Electric Heat Pump.

Heat pumps, when air over air type, have an extra setting on the thermostat labeled Emergency Heat, Although these thermostats can work on the other types of heating as well.

Both modern Gas and electric furnaces have the blower controlled by a blower board. The flame and or heating elements can also be controlled by the same or a separate board. SO you could have a board problem, or a safety switch or other symptom causing a safety switch to trip off on you.

Consult with your diagram and find something you can recognize then trace the wires down and follow to where you get the power to turn on the heat (usually always R feeds thermostat and W feeds Heat). Colors of the attached wires means nothing at this point. Look for the terminal designations not colors.
