I have a winchester repeating model 1890. the round piece that slides out when putting the .22 shorts in got lost. after loading you slide the round tube back in to hold the bullets in place. I believe it has a spring in it. that is the part I need. I am not sure what the name of the part is. Could you tell me the name and what a replacement part and cost. Where could find one and how much it should cost? thanks for your help. I will look for a reply. [email protected]

What is the year and value of Winchester 1890 22 short in good condition. serial # 644229

Hello, Mike -

1. I took the liberty of re-categorizing your question from Optics (binoculars, gun sights, lenses, etc.) where it landed, to Firearms.

2. I doubt most who volunteer to answer questions on Fixya.com are qualified to provide you a value for your rifle. For one thing, an appraiser would need to look and handle the rifle, which is a major challenge online. :) (Note: My now late father, a licensed auctioneer, used to sell the firearms of his friends who had passed away for their widows and I know he needed to look over all of the firearms in-person.)

3. As for the year your Winchester 1890 was manufactured, you are fortunate in that the Winchester Repeating Arms company provides a PDF document (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader software (free) installed) listing the models of firearms and range of serial numbers and what year they were manufactured. This is the link:
http://www.winchesterguns.com/content/dam/winchester-repeating-arms/support/faq/serial-number-reference/Winchester-Manufacture-Dates-by-Year-2012-Scanned-Documents.pdf

Easier than looking through the lists on the Winchester Repeating Arms document, though, the database offered by the website for Antique Guns and Collectible Firearms and Militaria Headquaters
(home page: http://oldguns.net/ ), Winchester Dates of Manufacture:
http://oldguns.net/sn_php/winmods.htm
I think you can figure it out. :)

4. First, your local public library may hold a recent book or two listing estimated values of firearms. One title which is updated regularly is The Blue Book of Gun Values. Note: Using your local public library and its collections represents your taxpayer dollars at work!

Second, read the questions and answers about gun appraisers here:
http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=311759

Second, you can conduct a search using your favorite search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc.) using the following search phrase:
firearms appraiser
OR
firearms appraisals

Third, the International Society of Appraisers provides a database which can be searched. This is the link:
https://www.isa-appraisers.org/find-an-appraiser
Enter the word firearms in the search box.

The American Society of Appraisers offers a similar database:
http://www.appraisers.org/find-an-appraiser
In the ASA Specialty search box (only), choose Firearms.

Personal opinion: To find an appraiser to value your rifle, I suggest you do not go to a firearms dealer, who may opt to purchase your rifle outright, since he / she may have a vested interest in the value of your rifle. Be prepared to pay a fee for an appraisal.

Best wishes.

Winchester Model 62 Pump Action Rifles The ultimate gallery gun

Several models of Winchester 62 pump action rifles. Top to bottom: 1906, 20-inch round barrel; 1890 octagonal barrel; prewar M62 with scope; postwar M62A.
Winchester Model 62 left side receiver. The huge "Winchester" rollmark may mean its a gallery gun.
No less than six generations of the Model 62 were made from 1932 until 1958. Three of these are pre-WWII while the other three are post-1945. The easiest way to tell postwar versions is that they have a 17-groove 8.75-inch foregrip while prewar versions have a 5.75-inch 10-groove grip. After 1940, the Model was modified with an improved hammer spring and dubbed the 62A, so if you see a 62A mark on your Winchester pump rifle, that is an easy way to tell that it was made after that year. The value of standard Model 62/62As start at about $300 for shooter grade guns and go as high as $1000.

Magazine tube follower? Is it contained in the magazine tube?

The magazine tubes that I am familiar with had a sort of tube within a tube. (Old Winchester .22 pump)
To load you would push in, twist, and pull out the Inner tube, slide in a bunch of .22 long rifle shells (pointy end in the same direction as the muzzle), and then push the Inner tube back in place. Ther was an internal spring with a sliding cover that provided the "push" to move the shells into the loading mechanism when the pump was cycled.
If one of these parts has a technical name, Magazine tube follower sounds like it would be appropriate.
Hope this helps.

I have a winchester pump 22 short with a j stevens

First, you need to know what you have. It can't be a Winchester with a Steven barrel.
It could be a 1890 or 1906 model.
Value depends 95% on condition.
