Unplug all USB devices that may be connected. Then do the following.

You can attempt a repair of the USB system by opening The Device Manager and
removing all of the USB devices. Then reboot the computer, that should cause
Windows to reload the USB drivers from the dll cache

I have the same external drive 320mb drive and you really do not need a manual for it. In order to use it, you may need to have it recognized by your PC/LAPTOP and/or format it by following the following steps below: Your external drive should be automatically recognized by your Windows O/S but in some rare case, you need to tell your PC/Laptop that it has a new drive connected via: CONTROL PANEL -> ADMISTRATIVE TOOLS -> COMPUTER MANAGEMENT -> STORAGE -> DISK MANAGEMENT -> locate your external drive -> right click on the external drive to bring up the context menu -> Create required partition(s) -> Quick FORMAT (NTFS is fine but I suggest FAT32 for more compatibility) -> 'change drive letter and path' to assign a drive letter to your external drive(s) .

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

USB hard drive not recognized by Mac and by PC

Does the external drive work when connected to some _other_ computer? (Friend? Office? Home?)

It could be a failure either in the "hardware" inside the external-case (the USB adapter & interface)
or in the disk-drive "inside" the external-case.

So, a qualified technician can open the external drive, remove the disk-drive, and connect it directly to a computer, to see if the files can be "directly" read from the disk-drive.

If not, then you should search online for a "data recovery" service -- they are expensive, but they physically repair a damaged disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your data to another disk-drive.

Your usb device could be finished or your USB ports may not be strong enough/ enough power to run the device.
