The sound is most likely from one of the wheels the drum rotates on ( usually the lower one ). The bearings wear and sometimes break and completely fall out from center of wheel. I replaced one on mine at a cost of $5.00 from a local repair shop. Just provide brand and model number when calling to see if they have the part in stock. You should be able to access this wheel by removing lower front panel and reaching. Please note I only had to remove the ring pin ( not the bolt ) to remove the wheel. It will be really tight when putting in new one but with a little force you should be able to manage. Before starting you will definitely want to unplug the dryer and still don't touch the electrical wiring or components. Hope this helps as it saved me money.

Smells like its burning and a rubbing sounds!

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE STARTING ANY REPAIRS
Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication, or maybe your drum belt has slipped off of the idler arm pulley.
If you have a front loading machine,

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch.
Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt.
Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm
pulley and motor.
Now is a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the
idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go
to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots
or wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably
only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade
of machine oil such as 3 in One oil.
Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.

Dryer sounds like metal rubbing, drum in a bind. The drum is turning, but making a sound, like metal to metal, especially when it starts up.

You have a bad drum bearing. When it heats up the sound goes away slightly. When the drum bearing goes bad it tilts the drum in the front and it is rubbing on the metal front. Check the seal in the front. You could use lub spray but that is only preventing the inedible-replacement. Good luck.

Drum not turning-very loud sound coming frm dryer when turned on

There could be multiple problems with you whirlpool dyer depending on the type of noise you are hearing. If the noise is a low grumble or loud buzzing sound this could indicate a bad motor. Which could explain you not hearing the drum turning. If however you hear a grating or grinding type noise but the drum is turning, this could indicate that something is rubbing or has become jammed inside the blower fan that circulates the air. if this is the case it too may have to be replaced. Also the drum can sometime come off the drum support rollers at the back of the dryer, but this is very uncommon, and only happens if they are very worn or broken. This can easily be diagnosed by a technician and if the motor is fine, will cost little to repair.Hope this helps.

Thanks

Your rollers probably need replacement. Get a bonified FSP idler instead of a crappy made in asia knock off. Check your drum slide. Rib side down with the belt to the drum.
