The directional pad on my phone wont work when i slide it up. and i can't hear anyone when i call them although they can hear me. i can hear them if i put them on speakerphone, though

problem can be solved.Since you can hear them and others can hear you, that means the mouthpiece of the phone is faulty.

The mouthpiece allow others to hear you when you make call.might have been caused by dirt's or it needs replacement.

You can lose the phone and clean it and if it do not respond after cleaning, that means it needs to be changed.

Also for the screen that goes off, it is caused by he flex.The flex is connected to the board of the phone and it is also connected to the board that makes the screen display.

The flex might be weak that is why it goes of when you slide the phone.it might have shifted from the position it was, so you can loosen the phone and adjust it.But if when adjusted it does not stop, that means you will need o replace it before it goes off completely.

I would advice if you do not have the knowledge of how to loose the phone, you can take it to a mobile engineer around you to prevent further damage on the phone.

Got the same problem

Just TURN OFF phone and remove battery for 2-3 seconds, then put it in your phone then try.
If it wont work then go to Nokia Care and tell them about the problem.

Perhaps the error is in the mouth piece of your unit. If you have a problem with the hardware, better send your phone to a Nokia Care Center to further check the hardware error.

judging from experience although with a sony ericsson, the usual diagnosis for that problem would be the earpiece of your d840. There simply could've been a loose connection with it.

You probably have a chip inside the center of the slider. Try taking a vac to it and sucking out any fragments that might make it rough. Otherwise you have damaged your phone and most likely your provider will not replace the phone due to normal wear and tear damage.
