Thanks johnnyzero, Yes yahoo search results, bing, google, and others were being redirected. Did not matter which search engine I used. I fanally gave up and reformated my hard drive. Problem solved. It just tied me up for a day and a half reloading my software. I did not load IE8 though. I'm going to stay with IE7. Thanks anyway for replying. What was your solution? I had ran many different virus and malware programs before reformating and nothing was ever found. Judd

I just finished dealing with a similar piece of malware and I may have a solution for you. Please check the following and let me know:

1) Are Yahoo search results also being hijacked/redirected?

2) When redirected, does IE briefly access a server at "r9237242.cn" or some similar address? Watch the status bar at the bottom of IE when being redirected.

Let me know and I can help you out further.

It sure sound like you had the same malware I was dealing with (TDSS.y Rootkit). Too bad you had to reformat your whole hard drive.

Anyway, here's the solution that finally worked for me after trying at least 25 different malware solutions with no success - download & run Esage Labs' Rootkit.Win32.TDSS remover here.

In my case, it was a single infected driver file, ATAPI.SYS.

A new variant seems to be out that is not detected by all the solutions mentioned here (as at Dec 23 2009). I removed the hard drive, connected it to another computer and scanned it with Microsoft Security Essentials. Worked for me!

First I"m assuming your using IE 8

Go to that house on the top of the screen press it choose your home page to go to each time you start IE.

Under tools internet options click delete browsing history on exit. Will keep browser running more smoothly.

About always being redirected to a different site. Check abnormal behavior with your firewall do scan ect.

What is a Backlink in SEO?

A backlink is an incoming link from an external website to specific webpage. For example, if you publish a webpage and 20 other websites link to it, your webpage has 20 backlinks. Links to the page from within your own website are not included in the backlink total.

Web developers benefit from backlinks (or "inlinks") in two different ways - direct traffic and search result placement. As more links to a specific webpage are published on external sites, there is greater potential for traffic to be generated from other websites. This is called direct traffic. By increasing direct traffic, a website can gradually grow its presence on the Web and generate a steady stream of visitors from other websites.

While direct traffic is helpful, most websites generate the majority of their traffic through search engines. Since search engines use backlinks as an important part of the their algorithms for search result placement, external links are important for good search ranking. Therefore, generating backlinks has become common practice for search engine optimization, or SEO. The more backlinks a webpage has, the better the chance that the page will rank highly in search results for relevant keywords. If a website has many pages that have backlinks, the overall number of incoming links may help increase the ranking of all pages within the website. While most backlinks point to a website's home page, incoming links to other pages within the website are beneficial as well. WHEN I GO TO MY GOOGLE HOME AND ENTER A WEB TO SEARCH I AM ALWAYS REDIRECTED TO SOMEOTHER SEARCH ENGINE OR CITY SEARCH. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO GET OUT OF THIS MESS.

Go to the preferences or settings menu for your browser of choice, and set your home page to 'www.google.com'. If you are using a Windows PC, open Internet Explorer, click the options button, then Internet Options. Look for a tab labeled 'Connections' and click it. Then click the button labeled 'LAN Settings'. If the box labeled 'Use a proxy server' is checked, uncheck it. If it is not checked, close out of Internet Explorer. In either case, close Internet Explorer and open the browser again. This should clear your issue.
If you're on a Mac, there are different steps. Let me know if you need additional help.

Google search redirects me to another site...how do I fix this?

That's a classic sign of a virus and or spyware. They redirect you to a site they control and try to get you to buy their virus protection.Reboot in "safe mode" and run your virus and spyware software.Make sure it's the deep scan so it clears your Restore files too. Also check your User Accounts for a "new" administrator. The virus will log on as administrator and control your computer so you can't delete the virus files.Let me know if this helps?

My search in the ie is redirected to a site I didn't request. How do I restore?

Is that a complete different web site? Then probably you have a trojan or worse, a virus in the system.
If a particuler site is involved, report against it in symantec.com.
