Question about Canon PowerShot SD500 / IXUS 700 Digital Camera
i read about your instruction regarding E18.
I have a sligthy similar problem:
my broth dropped it on sand!!
now i'm sure some sand is got in the zoom engine as when I power it on, the lens comes out, it makes some bits sound and it switch off after few seconds.
I tried once to open it without reaching the lens.
I would know if the solution posted on this site could be helpfull for my problem.
Thanks in advance.
go to fotogeeks.com (I think it is) I only saw it this morning a full photo layout of how to get to the lens and clean up the parts involved, might take some time but would be worth fixing. If you don't find it let me know

The usual response to this type of damage is to replace the camera
The likely cost of post/examination/repair[if possible] is ell on the way to a new camera
