Question about Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED Film Scanner (35 mm)

Nikon super coolscan 4000ed

I am trying to connect the scanner to either a eMac, iMac or G5.  The scanner was purchased about 7 years ago at that time it was connected to a Gateway PC. The PC doesn't work anymore.  I have attempted loading the orginal software in these machines.  And I have tried on the G5 (as administrator) downloading the software from the Nikon website. I have even checked the continuity of the 6 wire firewire cable and it appears ok. (twisted pair 3/4 switch to 5/6 and 5/6 switch to 3/4 and 1 and 2 are continuous.) When I look at the system profiler on the eMac and the iMac, the firewire does not show any devices present.
I would appreciate any help you could give me. Steve Crawshaw Department of Physics and Astronomy University of AR-Little Rock
I did attempt to send this yesterday:  When I tried to log on just now, I received the message of a bad password/when I tried to get a new password I got the message of invalid e-mail address.  So if you see this message twice that is why.  Thank you

The solution sounded real good, I was ready for it to work.

I updated the OSX machine in administrator/root to Nikon Scan 3.1.4:  I got the "ran installer sucessfuly.
Then with the downloaded firmware LS4000fw11_osX.sit ready, it extracted when I clicked on LS4000fw11_osx and went through the Software License Agreement.
Of course, power on and checked cable, Bad news.  The dialogue box said, "No Super Coolscan 4000ED connected"
    Thanks for everyones help

I have tried the system profiler and the mac's don't see anything on the firewire bus.  I am about to try another cable, just in case my continuity test didn't find the error:  Hope springs eternal.

Did you actualizaed the firmware to 1.1 before to use the nikon scan 4.02? It seems you have to use the 3.0 &+ version to upgrade the firmware. I am on macbook intel and no pbms except the ejecting fonctions works bad and i am trying to solve it. Happy new year anyway...

it seems I get better results directly from photoshop´s nikon plug-in. Maybe it works for you.
Have you checked the system profiler ("more info" button when "about this mac" is called from the blue apple in main menu)
to be sure the firewire connection is detected by the mac?

No Mac driver

Get the older 3.X version of Nikon Scan online.
It works fine with my 4000ED Firewire on a MBP running OSX 10.6.
For some reason my 5000ED USB runs fine on NS 4.0.2 and 10.6 on an older iMac, but 4.0.2 won't run at all on the MBP. Don't know why. Installed, uninstalled and reinstalled many times. No luck.

Recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7. Where can I get correct drivers to run with my Nikon Super Coolscan slide scanner LS-4000 ED model. I have Nikon Scan 3.0 twain software. Stu Milligan

Hello there.
This will help you if you have 64-bit Windows 7, because officially, there is not windows 7 64 bit driver.
Just read and do everything.
Otherwise, if you have windows 7 32bit click here:
To check bits, go right click on My Computer, Properties, and you will see it.

You're not going to be happy with this answer:

Nikon has formally sworn off doing ANY future software updates for their scanners. They stopped at 10.4 (pre-Leopard)

Yes, there are a LOT of people VERY unhappy with this answer, but we're all kind of stuck with it.

Compatibility with more recent Apple Mac computers

You could use virtual box ( unless you want to purchase vmware fusion or parallels ) to run windows or you could use boot camp on one of or both of the macs to run the software

Nikon Coolscan 4000ED

Just curious... did you unplug the unit for a period of time, or did you only power it off? I would definitely unplug it for about ten minutes, then plug it back in.
