Remove the softner dispenser. There will be a cap inside that pulls out. There will be a 1/2 inch bolt to remove. The agitator should pull off now. I put it on the floor and hld down with my feet and pull the sections apart.

Whirlpool washer agitator not working

You most likely need to replace the dogs in the agitator, two piece agitator design. It should spin one way and catch the other on the teeth of the dogs. It will spin freely either way when the dogs are wore out. This is for the top half of the agitator, bottom is fitted to transmission shaft. You pop the top cover, remove the 7/16 bolt and both halves together to change dogs of agitator. Pull halves apart to change dogs. Fairly simple.

Agitator issue (Agitator and not workin properly

The majority of the agitator problems with a whirlpool agitator involve the dogs wearing out on the two piece or dual agitaion agitators. It is simple to pull the agitator off by popping off the top cap and turning the 7/16 inch bolt counter clockwise in the center to release then pull off the agitator .
WIth some force it can be pulled apart to replace dogs, or any service store nearby.(The four little dogs have teeth on them which wear off over time)

Hope this helps.....

Agitator for whirlpool washing machine

The plastic dogs are stripped inside the center of the agitator. To remove agitator pop off the top center cover(slot for screwdriver) There is a 7/16 inch bolt with standard thread, remove it and pull out agitator. Pull the agitator apart, you can stand on the bottom half and pull on the top, you have to reassemble it with the new dogs replaced(there are four in a package) Fairly simple, no special tools needed,
good luck.

Can't separate agitator. Have tried extreme force to separate the top from bottom. There must be some other way on this unit. Whirlpool Ultimate Care II. Have removed agitator but the two halves won't come...

There are small but strong plastic tabs that hold the 2 pieces of the dual action agitator together. Look into the center from the top with a light you will see them. If you got the agitator out. 1 bolt 7/16 socket holds it in and down, seperating the 2 pieces to get to the dogs should be easy.

Trying to connect agitator without dogs getting out of place

I thought the two parts would snap/connect together. They don't. Put the agitator on upside down over the "dogs" and their connector. Holding that together put the top agitator over the bottom. Carefully put over the metal connector inside the washer and connect the bult. The bult is what holds the pieces together.
To take apart initially I had to use a socket set with a long extension and a pipe over the racket handle to get enough torque to loosen the bult

The following link should help you with removing the agitator to replace the dogs:

Whirlpool models generally only have two methods of removing the agitator. One type uses a hex bolt, and the other uses a recessed square nut. The removal procedures are explained in the link provided. I hope this helps you. Please let me know if still have questions.
