There is no option in the BIOS to enable USB keyboard support - there is only an optionto enable "USB Controller" and even this is only to toggle between the sytem being able to recognize USB storage devices

  • Steve Reass Nov 13, 2009

Also The usb keyboard works in the BIOS setup mode - might reboot and see if PS2 keyboard works in the BIOS mode

  • Steve Reass Nov 13, 2009

BTW unplugged USB keyboard and plugged in PS2 Keyboard and used F2 key to boot into BIOS to the PS@ keyboard port is not physically bad

Under BIOS setup, turn USB Emulation on. I had the same problem. Turning the USB Emulation on fixed my problem.

Try another one cause it might be corrupted...if the problem is the same ...this means that it is disabled...and try first to go to bios settings ..by pressing del on start-up.....choose optimal factory defaults ..and than press F10 do save the changes...this will restore to defaults ..and might enable it back .....
another thing to try is to go to control panel .( assuming the mouse is working ) select keyboard...on the window it shown select hardware ...than properties...than driver ...here you have multiple choices ...you can roll back the driver assuming that something went wrong into an automatically update ...or so ...or ...just update driver ...if the driver is present but not in function this will reload it ...into place ...
or ...another thing to do is to go to category view in thw control p[anel ..and when you click maintanance ..yu will have in theleft tasks the system restore .....this will get you the possibility to roll back the system to a previous date ...and restore the functions ...just by using the mouse...
in my oppinion there have to be something wrong with the key board cause usually if it does nopt responds..is cause it was unplugged during function ...and just need a proper plug in back ...and restart the system ...

ok ...now that I sow all the other options ..I see that is a matter of operation system not being able to see the keyboard...my advice is to proceed to the system restore to an earlier date that you know for sure that it worked...and will be just fine ..
if it works in bios ..there is nothing wrong with it ...also its not a question of being disabled...its just a matter of windows having an error and do not pick it up ..
so ...roll back the driver ..or go for the system restore...
in the worse case...like the system restore was not active ...and you have no point to go back to ...you have to repair the windows from a bootable cd ...but be sure that you choose repair after its shows previous windows versions...not install ..cause installing will cause you data lost into the C partition ...and will cost you time to restore the programs...

by the way ...being a usb plug ..might just need a driver ....if you have a cd that came with it ...run it ..

Seems that the PS/2 port on this computer's motherboard is defective & is not functioning any longer. Since the USB mouse is working, this is an indication that the USB port is fine & has no problems.
All you will need to do to be able to use the USB keyboard in Windows is to boot your computer into BIOS & enable the USB keyboard support in BIOS settings.

I have a dell inspiron desktop that has no ps2 port, only USB. From my older computer I would like to use my microsoft ergonomic keyboard that has a ps2 plug. I bought a PS2 to USB adapter but when I...

Hello,

The adapter you purchased is for use with a PS/2 mouse only. The only keyboard adapters will have keyboard and mouse in a "Y" adapter. The single adapters will not work for keyboards because they do not have the conversion electronics to go from PS/2 to USB, mice can work on either one. Do a google search for "usb to PS2 dual port adapter" you can get them for around $2 plus shipping.

I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.

Keyboard will not work. I shut off computer and removed mouse and keyboard and turned back on replacing the mouse and then the keyboard. Computer beeps (acknowledging the keyboard) but I can not type?...

If the keyboard is USB, and I am assuming it is, try plugging it into a different USB port and allow a minute for the drivers to install automatically.

If the keyboard is PS2 (round purple connector), make sure you have it plugged in BEFORE you turn the computer on, or it won't work.

If neither of these work, try a different keyboard; if that works, the keyboard needs to go.

Good luck!

I just did a system restore, and now the keyboard or the mouse is working

It *IS* working? So, what's the problem?

Is the keyboard jack plugged into the keyboard socket? not the mouse socket?

Is the keyboard jack plugged in to a USB port?

Have you tried rebooting once it is connected? Not sure if it makes a difference, but I know you can not hook up PS2 peripherals without rebooting.

Dell Dimension 3100 e10 ...usb won't work

Does the system respond to boot keys (F2, F12) when the DELL logo appears? If so the problem is with Windows drivers and probably can be resolved by reinstalling or rolling back the drivers, but how? Do you have access to another keyboard? Does the system have PS/2 ports? Do you have access to a PS/2 keyboard or adapter? If boot keys work, you could also choose F8 for Last Known Good Config (XP) or System Restore (Vista).

Have you tried different ports (front if using back or visa-versa)?
Try using just keyboard or mouse to see if one has somehow shorted. Also check the ports for any sign of damage.

Dell Optiplex 745 series keyboard and mouse (both usb stop working after windows starts)

Could try going into windows safe mode and select basic shell. It may then allow you to reconfigure the hardware settings of your system. Presume you have tried another usb port and removed other usb connected devices if they are using same settings ?

HELLO

is your mouse and keyboard plugged into a PS2 connector http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ps-2-ports.jpg
look inside of your case and see if any capacitors are buldging on your motherboard the tops of the capacitors should be level/flat if they're ok, sounds like they are going, look for brown rusty color also around tops of capacitors, might be your outputs are going. If you have your mouse and keyboard plugged into ps2 ports try a USB Mouse and keyboard, borrow one first or buy a usb laser mouse for $12 worth a try even if your ps2 ports are blown, use the usb ports for mouse/keys ;)
