Question about GE GSH22SGRSS Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

Not cooling! I noticed a whistling sound in my refrigerator that appeared to be coming from the freezer section. I emptied the ice maker bin which was was overflowing, do to my being away 3 weeks. The whistling sound stopped and the ice maker worked fine. One day later, we noticed the refrigerator is not cooling. We put thermometer in and it is holding steady at 50 degrees, even when turned up to 9. The freezer is starting to warm up also (25 degrees). The motor is running with no unusual sounds. Cold air is felt behind the ice bin. Lights and door water and ice dispenser works fine. Fridge is 3 years old. Please advise?

Re: Not cooling!

Check the rear of the freezer you may find a build up of ice there if so you have a defrost problem chances are the heater is bad you can unplug ref and let thaw or you can tear into the rear (pretty easy) and defrost with hair dryer and look at theheater which is a glass tube usual only one at the bottom of the coils but some models have two one in the center you will most likely find them bad if they are not chrome looking then they are bad replace defrost thermostat also this is common rule.let me know what you find god luck

Are you sure you have the ice bin properly in place?

Ice bin must be locked in place for proper ice dispensing. If necessary, turn auger driver behind ice bin counterclockwise to properly align ice bin with auger driver.

• Press the switch ON to activate ice maker. Slide bin into guide rails located on either side of the enclosure. Push the ice bin in until resistance is felt. Raise the front slightly and push the ice bin completely in. An audible "click" is heard when the ice bin is located correctly.

• After freezer section reaches between 0° to 2° F (-18° to -17° C), ice maker fills with water and begins operating. You will have a complete harvest of ice

approximately every hour.

• Allow approximately 3 to 6 hours after installation to receive first harvest of ice.

• Discard ice created within the first 12 hours of operation to verify system is flushed of impurities.

• Stop ice production by pressing the ON/OFF switch located on the front of the ice maker.

• The first one or two batches will probably contain undersized and irregular cubes because of air in the supply line.

• When the ice cubes are ejected it is normal for several cubes to be joined together at the ends. They can easily be broken apart. The ice maker will

continue to make ice until the supply of ice cubes raises the ice maker arm, shutting the ice maker off.

• Certain sounds may accompany the various cycles of the ice maker. The motor may have a slight hum, the cubes will rattle as they fall into an empty storage bin and the water valve may click or "buzz" occasionally.

Our ED5SHAXM ice maker is intermitant. It will make ice for several weeks and then suddenly stop making ice, the water flow to the ice maker stopes and the bin empties it's final time. Then weeks later it...

Either the freezer temperature is too high or the internal thermostat inside the ice maker is faulty.
The freezer temp must be 5 degrees or less for the ice maker to work correctly.
If the freezer checks out OK you will need to replace the ice maker.

Freezer area smells and ice cubes and butter taste off?

It sounds like the ice maker if equiped. Remove Ice bin and clean out,and try a lite spray of bleach or vinegar (don't mix) If the smell is still happening and comming from ice you may want to install a inline filter.

Ice cubes made by ice maker become large fused chunks over time.

Ice cubes will deteriorate over time if not used. They shrink due to defrosting of the freezer and will become stale.
Once the ice bin is full, turn the ice maker off until you use the cubes and or dump the cubes every 3 or 4 days and start over.

Refrigerator compartment not cooling

If you are sure the fan in the freezer is running and you don't feel any air flow out of the top middle vent inside the fridge section, then the damper motor must be bad. The damper motor is behind that vent cover inside the fridge section.

Ice maker won't stop making ice

OK, there's two possible issues but you have to figure out what is happening. Does the ice maker continue to make ice forever and would fill up the whole freezer section in time OR does the ice maker just "over make" ice that overfills the bin which then falls out? If the ice maker just keeps making ice you need the motor module replaced but if it can be turned off by moving the lever up then you need the "modified lever assy." that is on our service bulletins.
