I'm running on Athlon so F12 didn't work when booting. I pressed TAB then Alt+F2 to run a sort of setup. There was a Monitor Hardware part and Ive opened it. Then I activated fans. Now I will be waiting for results, if my screen will turn black again or not.

Okay, there is what is known as a Diagnostic Partition in all Dell computers. When you turn on your computer you need to Tap F12 when you see your BIOS load (which is the first thing you see on your screen when you turn on your computer.) You will then see several options, if you did it correctly, and the one on the very bottom usually says something along the line of "Boot to Utility Partition" and there will be an option for a screen test. Run it.

Please tell me if you need any further assistance.

Okay, what you did was run a diagnostic test on your computers cooling system, but not the monitor. If you have a Dell computer F12 should open a "boot options menu" and somewhere in there will be "boot to utility partition" Also another thing you can try is to actually disconnect the monitor from the computer, but leave it on because there is usually a self check feature.

You need to follow step by step troubleshooting and isolate the cause of the problem. Follow these steps:
1. First run a Self Test on the monitor, i.e disconnect it from your CPU, leave the power cable on and check if you see something that says "Self Test feature check".

2. If you can see the above "self test feature check" that means the monitor is fine and there is a problem with either your video card or the VGA cable. If you don't see it then ask Dell for a replacement, if it is in warranty.

3. Try another VGA cable to isolate the cause.

4. If it works fine with another VGA cable then get another cable for your monitor otherwise its your video card or the on-board video.

5. To make sure that it is the on-board video or the video card, just attach the monitor with another tower or a CPU, If it works with another CPU then its surely your video card or the on-board video.

These steps should resolve or at least help you with isolating the cause of the problem.

I'm having the problem of the back light shutting off after an uncertain amount of time. I did some research and it has led me believe it to be a problem with the Lcd transistors. how do I replace them?...

Manual is available at Top link,If this a 1 or 2 year old monitor,Then call dell with this issue,at the back you can find 20 digit serial no,that will give them the warranty status,so that you can get a replacement monitor if it is in warranty usually Monitor comes with 3 year warranty so better to call and get help i had the issue with my monitor too,i called & got it fixed

After 1 year, the monitor DELL E228WFP started to turn black

ainamat, Did you do the FLASHLIGHT TEST to evaluate the status of the "switch-mode-power-supply"??? Every owner of a lcd display with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" backlighting should know how to perform AND interpret the results!!!! It's a very easy test to do! FYI Your monitor has a backlighting sysem very similar to the NEW curlie-Q CFL energy-saving screw-in light bulbs!! They have an ELECTRONIC BALLAST (converter) circuit (ac to ac) to light them. Monitors have a INVERTER circuit (dc to ac) ballast circuit that generates 600-1100vac to light your CCFL's. If the SMPS detects a FAULT with itself or a circuit that it is supplying power to, It will go into SHUTDOWN mode to try and save the unit from a catastrophic, nonrecoverable failure. e.g. worst case sparks, smoke, fire!! Anna, you should READ and follow the threads in my other responses if you can get to my FIXYA profile pages under 12fixlouie, aka louie12fix and read what I have already written about the BLACK SCREEN of DEATH and YOUR options. If after doing some surfing of the net, you determine that this response has steered you to a solution to your BSOD problem, please rate this response on fixya. Good luck in your quest. 12fixlouie
