You can use the included application, EOS Utility. In the application, after connecting the camera to the laptop with the USB cable, select Remote Shooting.

The LCD screen on my 40D shows the image taken, or the live view image, but there are large areas of missing image. Almost like the picture has been laid on a black background then a large piece torn out...

If the Live View shows areas of total black, the LCD is probably faulty and needs to be taken to a Canon Dealer for repair/replacement. I believe the pictures are still okay on the computer in this case?

I just purchased my camera 2nd hand and it did not come with instructions. I downloaded but cant seem to use the LCD display to take pictures. according to the manual it should be able to . Please help

I have a 7D and there is a dedicated Live-View button, which makes it simple. The 40D Live View mode must be enabled in the menu uptions under the middle tab marked with a wrench and just below sensor cleaning. This is from page 108 in the manual.

It does look a little tricky, but possible. Let me know if you have any trouble. I have a friend with a 40D and I can give him a call.

Good Luck,
-Tor

How do I have the viewfinder image show in the LCD display

The EOS 350D doesn't have that function (Live View). You need to shoot with the viewfinder. Only later models of D-SLRs have Live View functions (EOS 500D, 50D, 40D, etc). You can however, playback your captured shots by pressing the "Play" button

I have a new Canon 40D. I just want to know how to turn off the view finder and just shoot pics through the LCD monitor?

Press the menu button, then scroll to the second wrench-symbol, then scroll to "Live View function settings" and press the SET-button. Then scroll to "Live View shoot" and press SET, then scroll to enable, and press SET again. Exit the menu by pressing the menu button twice.
Now you can turn on the live view by pressing the SET-button.
Hope this helps,  /Chris

No image on lcd

You need to enable the "live view" mode in the menu, then "set" live view as needed. When you are in this mode the shutter is open and the lens is flipped up to allow the image to hit the sensor and then to your preview screen. Because of this, the camera can't auto-focus, but there is an over-ride mode.

You may find the "video user's manual" links on this page useful to help you find and understand all the functions of your 40D.

I have a Canon Digital XTI. It works great but I can not view anything with the view finder. I can only see my settings. Please help. Thank you, Kendall Hodges

The view finder is the optical device at the top of the camera. Is this what you are referring to? If you are referring to the LCD panel on the back of the camera, Canon's Digital SLR cameras (nor other makers, as far as I know) did not have the option to preview your shot on the LCD before the 2007 models came out. A digital SLR camera is unlike a "point and shoot" camera in this regard.

Canon's current digital SLRs which have the "Live View" option, are the Rebel XSi, the EOS 40D, the EOS-1D MkIII, and the EOS-1Ds MkIII.

Canon 40D i do not know how to turn on my lcd screen so i can see through it while shooting my image, is it possible?

Hi,
Prepare to Live view shooting:
1. Set the lens focus mode (on the side of the lens) switch to <MF>
2. Set the shooting mode to a Creative Zone mode
3. In menu under the settings tab, select Live View function settings and then press <SET>
4. Turn with quick control dial to select Live View shoot and press <SET>
5. Turn with the control dial to select Enable and press <SET>

With the camera ready to shoot, press <SET> - image will appear on the screen in real-time

I hope this answered your question

Software getting started

I wouldn't use Canon's proprietary software. You are better off with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. You can get extensive training for both of these programs.
