Clicking or chattering is normally a sign of 'low' voltage, which can be a low battery and/or loose/dirty connections at the battery posts. Clean cable ends and replace hardware if needed. Tighten hardware

If it is a large click, then that is the pto clutch activating (as in the blades are ON)
and that will not allow the engine to start.

Sometimes when a battery is low or connections at the battery are dirty, you will hear a click, that is the solenoid activating, but the battery voltage is low enough that the starter will not turn.
Sometimes this condition has a chatter.

Easiest test for this situation is jump start from you automobile, or charge the battery for an hour,
and see what happens from there.

let me know if you need more deatail. thanks, rwvanlue

Wont start but makes weird stuttering sound

Sounds like the battery is low on charge or is in need of replacement in most cases.
I would not change the starter until trying a new battery that is fully charged.

WONT START, BATTERY IS UP. MAKES CLICKING SOUND.

if the clicking sound comes from the solenoid when you try to start the engine the solenoid may need replacing, the solenoid is like a big switch that takes the power from the battery to the starter motor, inside it there contacts that come together to make contact & that is where the problem is.....hope this helps.....cheers

My car was making a clicking sound, so i replaced the starter, and after the new one was in, its still making a clicking sound and still wont start.

Sounds like you either have a loose connection or a bad starter solenoid, or a bad battery. Check the connections to your battery and starter and make sure they are tight. Have your battery load tested it may be bad.

If your starter came with a solenoid mounted on the satrter than it should be new too and that should not be the problem. If you have a fendor mounted solenoid then I would take a screwdriver and cross the positive and negative terminals. This will feed the starter directly and bypass the solenoid. If the starter turns over then you need a new solenoid. I am guessing that your battery terminals are loose and I would start there.

Car wont start

Fully charge battery remove and take to a shop, bench test the battery. If its not the battery remove the starter and bench test it, its either the battery or the starter.

Cub cadet 2542 wont start... loud clicking noise when I try to start it.

Your battery sounds like it is dead, check it and get a new one. the clicking sounds to me like the starter, they will make a loud clicking noise when there is not enough juice to get them turning.

This sounds like a starter problem, does it click when you hit the key? are the battery cables ok, not corroded?
