I assume your referring to a clothes washer, if that's the case then here's what going on... you need to replaced the hot/cold inlet valve assembly of your washing machine... read on:

The hot and cold water supplies to your washing machine are connected to an inlet valve that is controlled electronically by an internal solenoid that opens and closes the valve based on your wash settings. It is essentially a "mixing valve" that will let only hot, only cold, or both valves on the assembly open based on what temperature the water needs to be for your wash cycle.

The drum is filling up and overflowing because the internal solenoid of your inlet valve has gone bad. The solenoid is not fully closing the valve when your wash cycle is over.

Replacement is fairly straightforward. Turn off the hot and cold water to the appliance and remove the fill tubes, pull out your machine so you can get behind it and remove the back panel of your washer exposing the inlet valve assembly. Youll see some wires going to the inlet valve body, make note of their location or tape them so you know where they go, now simply unscrew the valve assembly and insert the new one. attach the wires, reinstall the back of your machine, hook up the fill tubes to it (making sure you have HOT/COLD oriented correctly on the valve assembly), and open the water valves. You are done, and your machine will no longer fill by itself!

My Sears series 80 washer fills till it is overflowing and doesnt shut off water flow, it was overflowing onto floor this morning, it is full to the rim now, and wont drain or do anything when it is turned...

The usual arrangement is there are 2 electrical water inlet valves, one for Hot and 1 for Cold. These valves are turned on by the timer, and remain on until the water level switch turns them on, and allows the washer to then run. It sounds like this water level switch is bad. This switch should be in the panel above the top of the washer, and has a rubber/plastic tube that goes toward the washer drum. It is also possible that the rubber tube is off or blocked. (if the water inlet valve is stuck open, turning the washer off will NOT stop the water).

Good Luck,
Bill

The water continued to fill the drum and overflowed onto the floor

ONE OF TWO THINGS----YOUR WATER VALVE IS STUCK OPEN OR THE LOAD SELECTOR (SMALL MEDIUM LARGE LOAD) IS NOT WORKING,SO IT DON'T KNOW IF IT IS FULL OR NOT.

Even when not programmed to the washer/dryer fills up with water?

Check the water inlet valves, located where the water lines plug into the machine. Also check for proper water pressure and make sure that your water pressure is not surging. If this help please rate. Thank you

Washer filled up with water when not turned on

It sounds like the water inlet valve assembly is letting a trickle of water thru when its not supposed to. It is located on the rear of the washer, it is the part the water hoses connect to. Make sure the power and water are turned off, then disconnect the water fill hoses. The valve is attached to a bracket, the valve will have 4 electrical selenoids on it and a hose leading further into the machine. Make a drawing of where the wires/colors were attached before you pull them off. The valve for that machine (MLG2000AWW or MLG2000AXW) usually costs about $45.00 to $55.00

Water overflow

Are you on a well? Often people with a lot of sediment in water get sick of the screens in water valve plugging up so they remove them. NEVER remove these screens. If any sediment gets into valve it can hold it open causing flooding. If you unplug unit and water still comes in you must replace valve.

Drum filling with water when machine switched off

what you refer to as the overflow cap is the cover to the filter which you should remove regularly and check. however nothing to do with your problem. the water could be coming from two sources: first, if the drain is plumbed in under the sink, water can flow into the machine every time you empty the sink. the cure is to put the drain hose up as far as possible in a swan neck. secondly, the intake water valves could be leaking and the only cure then is to replace them
