Question about Canon PIXMA MP830 All-In-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

Requires Head Alignment EVERY time switch power on

Purchased MP830 August; For 6 weeks now every time I switch power on the language choice panel comes up first, then' !Head alignment required. Load paper and press [OK]'; This takes time, wastes ink, and is very annoying!

Tried all of the above;  No joy. Can't leave printer on throughout as I live in area of tropical thunderstorms.  One thing I just did was when it asks "Requires Head Alignment...Yes/No" I "OK-d" 'No' instead of 'Yes'.  That at least stops the test page from printing! (and it printed a page ok after having done so).
I'd be happy to receive more suggestions of a solution.

Thanks.  I am sure that email from Canon only applies to USA.

I live far up country in Kenya but will try at Canon Authorized Service Centre in Nairobi from where I purchased...sometime after the demos have ceased!

It sounds like the printer is not keeping its internal memory. It either has corrupt internal flash memory, or it has an internal bios chip with an attached battery and the battery is dead. In any case, every time you turn it off it forgets everything. When you turn it back on, it acts like you're turning it on for the first time.

I have tried to find some specific information on this model to see if we can replace the memory and or battery. However, I haven't been able to find the specific information for it, so I contacted Canon. I hope to hear back from them within a day, and I will let you know what I learn.

Of course, you could just leave the printer on all the time and it wouldn't lose its memory, but I assume that's a less than ideal solution.

Here's the response I got from Canon. Not exactly what I was looking for, but you may want to try this.

Let me know if it helps at all. If not, I'll exchange words with their techs some more:

On the MP830, press Menu and Device Settings and Reset Settings to reset the unit.

Then with the power on, unplug the power cord for ten seconds and then plug it back in. Turn it on.

If it is still doing the same, remove the ink. Raise the locking arm for the print head and remove the print head. Put the locking arm back down and then turn the unit back on.

I'm personally out of ideas. However, Canon informs me that you should be able to get the printer replaced under warranty. Here's the email from them:

Unfortunately, if your MP830 refuses to hold is initial settings, the unit will require service. Please read the information below which explains the Service Options available to you.

    Service Options

There are two options that Canon offers for service, the Warranty
Exchange or repair at an Canon Authorized Service Facility (ASF).

Since the printer was purchased within a one year period, you qualify for the Warranty Exchange. With this warranty option, Canon would send you a replacement printer via UPS ground shipping. If the case is processed before 4pm (ET), the unit will be shipped out the same day. If the case is processed after 4pm (ET), the unit will not go out until the following business day. Saturday and Sunday are not considered business days.

The replacement model would be factory refurbished; however, these units are tested to ensure that they work like new. Only the base unit is sent to you. Once you receive the replacement you will send the defective unit back to Canon. Paper trays, ink tanks, power cords, and the print head should be taken from the original unit before it is sent back to Canon. The original unit is sent back using a prepaid shipping label that is sent with the replacement unit. Please note that if you choose to have UPS come and pick it up, you will be charged a pick up fee (currently $10). As an alternative, you may take your unit to a UPS drop off point or a point where UPS has a regular pick up, such as your work place, where it will be shipped at no charge.

So that we can process your request for the Warranty Exchange, please provide or confirm the following information:

    1. First and Last Name:

    2. Your physical street address: (no post office boxes please)

    3. City, State, and ZIP code:

    4. Unit model:

    5. Unit serial number:

    6. Telephone number:

    7. Purchase date:

Once we receive this information, we will be able to process your

Your other option would be to take it to a Canon Authorized Service Center.

You can find the closest Cannon Authorized Service Center on their webpage -

    Good luck with it.

Canon mp830 all in one, has all led in a foreign language. how do i get back to english

It is somewhat complicated if you cannot read the display as you go. I will be helpful to make sure you press the buttons in the solution below exactly as instructed. Hopefully, you can find your way back to English (or language of your choice):

1) With power on, Press <Menu>
2) Press [>] to select "Maintenance/Settings" - the icon has a pic of a wrench or tools of some sort
3) Press <OK>
4) Press [>] once to select "Device Settings"
5) Press <OK>
6) Press "Down arrow" 3 times to select "Language selection"
7) Press <OK>
8) Press "Down arrow" until English (or language of your choice) is highlighted
9) Press <OK>
10) Press <Stop/Reset> three times to return to main menu screen.

Your display should now be in English, or the language of your choice.

My MP830 leaves white horizontal bands when printing black & white documents. Color printing seems fine. Pattern 'F' is missing on the print alignment page.

You need to continually clean and deep clean and realign the black until the results are acceptable. Try manual alignment if the auto does not work. Also clean around the exit hole of the black ink cartidge with a cotton bud and isoproyl alcohol.

MP830 PGBK does not print, tried new cartridges and usual cleaning etc, nothing. Bought new print head but still does not print. Other colours Bk,Y,M,C all ok. Have tried 'Auto Alignment' but this fails...

the printhead probably needs to be taken out of printer and cleaned.

just pop the ink cartridges out, then remove the print-head, fill a sink full of warm water, and swirl the print head around in the warm water. Blow through the color slits on the print head into the sink full of water it will get messy. empty the sink full of colored warm water.
rinse and repeat till your are satisfied its clean. dry it off with a cloth towel you don't care for, because it will get messy and covered in ink.
put your printer back together and it should may take a few times...but i got my printer 'PGBK ink cartridge' working again doing this. or you can spend 100 bucks and buy a new printer is a mp830 it came apart easily no tools or force needed... good luck and don't break your printer...its easy.
