Watch this and apply what you learn. It's really quite simple.
R² Drive Link Outboard Clutch by Drivelink.blogspot.com

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed.
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of starter cord or nylon rope be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. Everyone I’ve ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
Let us know how it worked for you. GL

Outboard drums (drums on the outside of the clutch) are held on by a nut or e-clip.

Inboard drums are held on by the clutch which is threaded onto the crankshaft. And there is the challange.
***NOTE all chain saw clutches have LEFT hand threads, so, rightey loosey, lefty tightey. (just backwards from everything else)

*** NOTE #2: DO NOT USE AN IMPACT GUN
this will most certainly shear the flywheel key or damage the flywheel !!!!! (after 35 years, you can ask me how I know that, LOL)

1) Use a piston stop to hold piston from moving: THIS IS A MUST !!!
Ok, so you do not have one, let's make one.
a) remove the spark plug
b) insert a piece of recoil rope into the cylinder hole, leaving a tail to remove it by. (rope, large shoe string, anything that is soft, that is aprox 1/4 to 5/16 in diameter to place into the spark plug hole to help the piston to stop it's travel by filling up the empty space. Just make sure you can remove it later)
c) secure the saw (extra set of hands may be needed) and with a suitable wrench on the clutch center, rotate the clutch to the right until piston comes to a stop. With a hammer, tap the wrench to aid in rotation. This can be very difficult, and may take several taps.
d) after removed, inspect and grease the drum bearing before re-assemlby.
e) upon re-assembly of clutch, tighten by hand only, NO hammer required. The force of the chain will tighten the clutch.
f) remove the rope, and re-install the spark plug.

Why does the chain keeps tightening

Has it ever come off while using it? If so, there may be burrs on the drive teeth making the chain wider than the bar opening, also if there is no oil getting to chain while operating chain could bind from heat, check sprocket on the bar tip for blockage and inspect the clutch bearing.

Clutch removal tool?

not recommended, if you use a impact the end of the crank and bolts and nuts are small you can snap off the bolt or worse snap the crank end
also many drums are held on with a snap ring and then the clutch can
be held in place with a both or nut on the end and there may be set screws on some models as well
as in most saws the drum and sprockets are what wear first, normally you can just replace the drum and sockets before you have to replace the entire clutch assembly, so if you have never replaced the drum or sprokets before once you remove the drum if the clutch spring is not broke, just replace the drum and sprocket will save you a bunch of money

Partner 370 how to replace worn sprocket drive on clutch drum

You need to remove the clutch there is a special tool that fits into the two cut a ways in the sides of the clutch centre, the tool then has a 19mm nut on the other end this allows you to jar the clutch off against the compression of the saw, the clutch is just spun onto the crank with a left hand thread so it needs to be jarred off clockwise, an impact gun with a 19mm socket will work very well, the tool is part no. 530031112, should be available on the web.

is the chain brake still applied, thus gripping the drum on the sprocket.. Remove the E-clip and take the chain brake off... clutch drum should lift out.

Chain turns when idling

If the oil pump gear is driven by the back of the sprocket you must make sure the the sprocket has engaged into it correctly if it has not the sprocket will bind on the back of the clutch

On my petrol chainsaw the cog that turns the chain is not moveing

The sprocket should be fixed to the outer clutch drum. With the engine off, and the bar and chain off, hold the sprocket with channel lock pliers and turn the outer clutch drum by hand. If the sprocket does not turn, but the drum does, then the clutch must be replaced. (Left hand threads) To keep the engine from turning while trying to remove the clutch internals, stuff starter cord into the upper cylinder head area so that the piston cannot rise above the top of the exhaust port. If you have a saw service shop near you, you might farm out the clutch replacement. It usually requires a special tool to turn the clutch internals. Good luck!
