Question about KitchenAid K5SS Heavy Duty Commercial Stand Mixer

1 Answer

My mixer is making a grinding sound. I had it serviced a few years ago, because the gears sounded like they were slipping when making bread doughs. The service center said it only needed an oil change. When it came back it didn't seem to have the same power or torque to the motor. Especially when making bread recipes. Now it is making a grinding or growling type noise and I am only making a soft cookie dough. It makes it even when it isn't under a load. It is not smoking or smelling. Is it worth fixing again? Is there a repair I can do myself? The repair place is 5 hours away and very expensive to ship.

Its worth fixing but having someone who specializes in your product is the key, these machines are wonderful products and engineered great. I would say if your mechanically inclined jump on inside the machine and see whats going on, but if your NOT send unit to us USPS it's not that expensive plus you would only have to pay oneway, we will take care of the shipping from our side,,estimated cost $29.00-$49.00

SOURCE: KitchenAid 600, Stand Mixer -

If the beater is grinding when it meets resistance, it generally indicates that an internal gear has broken or been stripped.

With the Professional 600 stand mixer, up to 14 cups of white flour or only 8 cups of any flour are recommended at one time. Speed 2 is the only speed that should be used for bread dough and it should never be kneaded for longer than 7 minutes. Failure to do any of these things make cause problems for the mixer motor.

If you are interested in self-repair, I recommend mendingshed.com. They have internal parts available to order and also have a .pdf file for the Kitchenaid Mixer Service Manual.

If you are interested in a repair facility, please visit the following link:

This is a listing of certified repair locations.

Also, if the mixer is less than a year old, Kitchenaid may replace it under their 1 Year Manufacturer's Warranty. I would recommend calling their customer service. Their toll-free telephone number is:

Why can't my kitchen aid mixer turn n

Sounds like the worm gear was stripped. This gear is designed to fail when the load on the motor is too great. This protects the motor from overheating and burning out. By the way, the mixer should not be used above the number 2 speed when using the dough hook.

The worm gear is not all that hard to replace although you will have to contend with a lot of grease. See the Service Manual:

Never used new bosch universal plus making bread started rattling sound

I do not know a lot about this machine. I am a DIY fix anything. It sounds like one of the mounting points on either the motor or the gearing gave way. Regardless it is new, send it back & have it fixed or replaced. Sorry, I know that is not what you wanted to hear, but is safest considering your investment.

That could be gears or the motor or the connector to the mixer head etc. Since this is two weeks old I wouldn't even worry about what just take it back and get a replacement. Even the new kitchenaids are very good and very realiable after years of use and abuse. Abuse is something like Dad I tried making sand from some rocks. Still worked after that btw.

You just got a bad unit which from my experience has been pretty rare. It will be under warranty so just get it replaced and enjoy the new one for years to come instead of worrying about this one.

It makes a grinding sound when it starts up but then runs o.k. It also gets hot after mixing bread dough.

How old is the unit?. Sounds like the armature is poling, ie rubbing against the windings. This normally happens when the bearings are worn - hence the question about age.

If it is not in the motor section, it could be in the gearing that drives the spools.

Bread dough hook slips when mixing

This is not a solution but I think you have a serious problem you might have sheared some gear teeth whent the mixer jammed and it only manifests itself under a heavy load, I would take it to a repair guy, those mixers are expensive and it would be worth it.

Hi. Stop using your mixer. If your mixer is still covered by warranty, call Kitchenaid Customer Service, they are very good with warranty repairs.

If your mixer is out of warranty, remove the silver band that surrounds the top of mixer. Remove the top cover. At the front of the mixer, locate the transmission housing which is now exposed. Examine this housing carefully for cracks. If you find cracks anywhere in this housing, you have found the under-engineered plastic transmission housing. Kitchenaid's replacement housing is made of metal. Your plastic housing has no business being in a mixer that is marketed as being able to mix bread dough. It cannot!

If you're confident that you can make the repairs yourself, go to the Kitchenaid website and download the parts drawings. Remove the Trans. housing, remove the worm gear shaft assembly which is driven by the motor.. Remove and save as much grease as necessary to thoroughly inspect the worm gear. Inspect the worm shaft bearings. Look for cracks, or missing pieces on the bearings. Look for crunched cogs on all gears. Be prepared to wait at least a month for your parts to arrive after you order them. The replacement grease should be Shell Darina 2, or Chevron FM ALC EP 2.

If you're not confident about repairing this yourself, call Kitchenaid and determine the nearest "approved" repair shop.

You may be able to pressure Kitchenaid to pay for the damaged parts in your mixer. They are still installing these plastic Trans. housing on new mixers. Insist on a metal cover when replacing. Apparently, Kitchenaid feels no shame in their manufacturing process, and will not issue a recall notice for these housings. They are substandard at best.

If you found this solution helpful, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45.

HELP!!

The instructions advise to not run above speed 2 with the dough hook, making bread. This might be what caused it to be destroyed.
