1000gb model have had for 3 months with no problems but today does not show up on computer and making clicking sounds help thanks

Have you downloaded another prog recently, about the time you lost the HDD?

Have you pulled the usb restart poota, wait till fully setup, reinstall usb, it just might plug and play.

If not, you will have too re-install from install/setup disc.

Unfortunately if the drive is making noises most likely the drive is having a mechanical problem and the drive will need to be replace. If you just did purchase the drive you might go back to the place that you purchaced it to see if you can get it replace. You may also need to contact Buffalo Technology to get an RMA.

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4. Let me know if you need further assistance. From reading on the Buffalo web forum just now, you need to try using a different USB cable. If that doesn't work, try using the device on a different computer. If it continues to not work, then the device has failed in some way.

Contact Buffalo as soon as possible to request an RMA to replace the drive (http://www.buffalotech.com/contact/). Information on Buffalo warranties are available here: (http://www.buffalotech.com/support/warranty/)

If you have data on the drive that you absolutely have to have, then you may want to consider sending the drive to a data recovery service like DriveSavers. There are many drive recovery companies available. I not DriveSavers as an example and because I have experience with them.

1. Right click on My Computer and choose Manage.

2. Navigate to Disk Management and check to see if the drive is appearing as a drive.

3. If it is showing as unallocated, right-click on it and Partition the drive.

4. If it is showing as formatted and healthy, right-click on it, choose 'change Drive Letter and Path' to assign a drive letter.

I'v just bought Buffalo's external hard drive about three months ago, the problem came out about two months ago when i tried to transfer some files, and the transfer rate suddenly decreasing significantly...


Is it "slow" only on your computer, or also on some other computer?

If it _consistently_ is slow, then it probably has at least a one-year warranty. So, return it to where you bought it, and get it repaired/replaced.

hello i was using my buffalo ministation 320 gb external hard drive about a week ago, it was working fine but I left it on my bed when I was done. About 2 days later I went to change my bed sheets and the external hard drive feel on the floor. Now when I connect it to my computer it makes a connected sound but it does not show up on my computer but it is recognized when I safely disconnect it from my computer. I tried it on my laptop, it installs but its the same, it is not detected under my computer so therefore I am not able to access my files. Please tell me what I can do to retrieve my data. Thank you.

WD ITB harddrive makes noise


From what you've described, it sounds like you have an external drive, rather than an internal. A clicking noise generally emplies hard drive failure, but sometimes the problem could be the actual USB cable. Have that switched and if the problem persists, try running WD's diagnostic software for any fatality. This will only work if the drive is visible in disk management (not necessarily my computer).

Posted Oct 13, 2006 - It's not the drives that fail, it's the power supplies... They fry after about 3 months-1.5 years. LaCie sells replacements for about $16-$20, dpeneding on the model. We have over 20 of these drives, and here's how you know: the drive spins up, then down - it tries to mount, data transfer will freeze, etc. Just put another power supply on it, and 9 times out of 10, it's fine. Of course, any drive can fry on you, but these have proven to be extremely reliable under some of the hardest use imaginable.

A clicking noise from a harddrive is defenenly NOT a good thing. It usually means that the harddrive is going bad.
