The disk-drive inside the unit is malfunctioning, and producing those "clicks". It's dead -- all the data on it has been "lost", unless you contact an expensive "Data Recovery Service", and ship them your unit.

Acomdata HD120U2FE-72 120 GB external Hard Drive

OK, 2 things to check. First and foremost, when you plug it into the PC does it make that nifty noise to let you know it sees a new piece of hardware?

Second, if it does, you probably need to initialize the disk. Hit the windows button, right click on computer, and select manage. Under the storage category highlight Disk management. If you see the drive there, you can right click and select initialize, or format. From there the system should see the drive.

Acomdata 500 GB doesn't show on XP or OSX. All I get is a faint ticking noise about 1 per second. Is it toast?

50/50. You need to install it inside a PC to see if the file are recoverable or not. most external drive have power supply issues..

Running mac osx my acomdata external drive lights

This is the solution that worked for me.
Luckily I have another external drive of the exact same model that is working fine.
I used the power supply from the good working model and plugged it into the bad drive. The bad drive booted right up. Evidently the power supply was the issue, not the drive itself.
Even though the bad power supply had enough juice to light up the drive, it was not able to make the drive spin correctly.

Acomdata hard drive Model HD320FES-72

Sounds like the drive has seized spindle... Not good news.
Is it buzzing similar to any of these noises: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
What you should do is remove the internal drive from the enclosure and connect it directly to the computer. If still buzzing then it's a real mechanical problem...

Try checking your power cord adapter.
I found the same problem was with the cord.
Luckily, I had another Acomdata HD cord to check the problem.
