No pilot light, been standing unused for some time.

You may well have to purge the gas line as there will be air in there , as the pilot injector is very small it would take ages for the air to come out .

Will not fire up!

If the pilot comes on but goes out straight away then replacing the thermcouple should sort out the problem. If not pilot you may need to run a gas leakage test, see patio heater problem solving on how to do a leakage test. There are some very helpful guides from a specialist patio heater company.

Pilot light wont ignite on patio heater

It may be that your cylinder is malfunctioning, cylinder has a leak, or the pilot is clogged. Please see steps below to troubleshoot. Note:Regular maintenance is critical to the successful operation of your patio heater.
  1. Is the cylinder valve closed? If so, open the cylinder valve but not fully.
  2. Check to see if you can light it manually. If the unit lights manually but not with igniter, service or replace igniter switch.
  3. Ensure that there is no air in the gas line. Open the gas line and bleed it (pressing control knob in) for not more than 1 - 2 minutes or until you smell gas.
  4. There may be a blockage in the orifice or pilot tube? Bugs and spiders get into the pilot assembly, venturi tube and burner ports causing the unit to either not light or poor performance.
  5. Is the regulator hose pinched or kinked?
  6. Cleaning the pilot assembly.
  7. If the piezo igniter won't spark to light the pilot, check the wiring to the igniter, It may simply have lost it's ground. Slide the wire off the igniter prong (looks like a thick needle) on the pilot assembly and then push it back on. That usually will reestablish the ground.
If you continue to have problems with the heater, contact Blue Rhino (the manufacturer) Customer Care 800-762-1142.

Hope this helps you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know.

The pilot seems to light but then when I turn the knob to ignite the main burner, the pilot goes out. Is there a technique to clean the igniting assembly?

let the pilot light burn for a few min and get hot after this try slowly moving the knob over to full burn. Sometimes it just need to heat up.

Once I get the pilot light lit , hold for 30 seconds, and the let the knob out to turn to low or high, the pilot light won't stay lit.

From what you're describing, either the Thermocouple needs cleaning or it needs replacing, However, these are not easy units to work on for a Do it your-selfer. so I would recommend taking it in to a pro who can get the part if necessary and replace it if necessary. Most independent hearth stores that sell and service gas logs and gas fireplaces can help you.

Can't light. Pilot lights but then wont light when turned to on.

There will be a flame sensor on the gas valve. Replacing the gas valve (if it comes with the sensor) will get it working.

The pilot light will not stay lit to light the heater.

The power pile (pilot generator) is defective. It produces a milivolt signal to ensure to keep the gas valve open. If it goes bad, the valve thinks the pilot is out, even when you are holding the button down, so when you release the button, it shuts the gas off to prevent excess gas buildup and a possible explosion.
