My Dell 3100cn printer keeps asking me to "Load Tray 1 Letter Plain 1".
There is already letter sized paper in Tray 1.
It will allow me to cancel the job, but as soon I try to print another document, I get the same message again.
I checked the paper guards and everything seems to be lined up appropriately.
Please, Any Suggestions??
I had the same problem as TBPC, and as the third post indicated, I found the sensors on the paper feeder assembly(which had been dropped) loose. The sensor is made up of just three white buttons on the left side of the assembly (where you put the tray into, the part that seperates from the rest of the printer when you pick it up). I opened the side of the assembly, put the sensor back in place, and it detected the paper. I originally thought it may have been the tray itself, so I saved some money by following the third post. Thank you, whoever you are.
First, the obvious: Make sure both the laser printer (through its front panel) and the program's printing preferences are set to the same paper size.
Now my story:
Printing out a full page graphic. MPF with covers2/letter. 3100 kept saying 'load MPF' no matter what (reboot|reload|re-front panel menu). Changed printing preference in program to align center and it printed without a problem. Makes no sense and I can't reproduce it. Maybe a fluke or maybe a bug in the error handling of margins.

In most cases if the printer is asking for an unexpected manual feed it is because the paper tray is not set to the right paper size or type. To set the paper size to the most common size and type (letter size plain paper) use the following instructions. 1. Press theMenubutton. 2. Press the right arrow key untilPaper Menuthen press Check Mark. 3. Press the right arrow key untilSize/Typethen press Check Mark. 4. Press the right arrow key untilTray 1then press Check Mark. 5. Press the right or left arrow key untilLetter then press Check Mark. 6. Press the right or left arrow key untilPlainthen press Check Mark. 7. Press the back button untilReadyis displayed. This will set up your printer tray for plain letter paper and should relieve the manual feed error unless yourcomputeris sending other paper size/type settings.
You have the settinigs on the printer wrong. There are two things you need to do: 1. Open the tray and check that the paper guides are set to 8.5 x 11 (letter). There are both length and width guides in the paper tray, and EXEC size is quite a bit off from letter-it is more than 0.5 inch narrower than letter. It is also shorter than letter. 2. On the printer, use the settings button to navigate to the paper size. (The exact wording may vary; it's been a while since I worked on a 4050. It may be under print settings.) Once you find the paper size menu, configure tray 2-yes, I'm sure-to use letter size, any type. By the way, on HP lasers, tray 1 is the fold down tray on the front, tray 2 is the tray that will hold 500 sheets of paper and is the "drawer" that you load. Don't ask me why they use that numbering system.
Check your printer for paper size and type settings. Ensure they are set to letter and plain1. Also check the program you are printing from (Word, wordperfect, etc) and ensure the paper size is correct there as well.
use the mpf tray. go to the machine press menu down arrow untll you get to tray settings. right arrow over till u get to paper type...then down arrow till you see paper size...right arrow again till u see tray 1...down arrow till you see mpf..right arrow till you see letter. Now that you are in the mfp section you can down arrow and you will see serveral selections I would keep it at letter. when you select it an * will appear next to letter. Then select menu and you and the printer is set. Now go to the print option in the program that you are using and when the dialog box to print opens select properties. go to paper quality the mpf should be selected in the tray souce. Now go down and you will see the advance button, click on that you will see Paper/Output make sure it says Paper Size and Letter is selected. Media Type should say Plain 1. If the invitations is on a heavier paper like card stock click the down arrow and select Covers 1 . If your paper is coated like matte finish photo paper select Coated 1. Now click ok. Do a test print and see if you get what you want. If not, let me know.--Deeva
On printer check media/paper type tray 2 or 3 is plain and tray 2/3 is set for letter paper size too, via printer control panel. Also check under paper handling other options for tray 1, also on tray 2 and 3, I think there is a blue little round switch on left should be set as letter not custom.
Some paper types cannot be feed from anywhere else but tray1/bypass ie labels/laminate/card stock.
Check print driver on pc has tray 3 option installed and is not set as default to print to manual bypass/tray 1
light flashing cause printer wants paper type/size that it "thinks" it hasn't got in tray 2/3
It may not be the size settings, it may be that you need to reinstall the driver software. The Best thing to do first is unhook the pritner from the computer and uninstall the printers software. Once it's uninstalled, Reboot the computer. then Reinstall the Software, inserting the pritner cable when advised to, this usually resolves the issue, If it doesnt, then there is eithe a firmware or a sensor or feeder failure. Those are best to be troubleshooted by Dell themselves.
