Question about Brother EM-430 Typewriter

Brother AX-450 Electronic typewriter

When I type on it its like the ribbon wont advance. It wont move so what I'm typing doesnt show up at all.

2 thing come to mind you may check.
First check the ribbon cartridge to see if it is empty..These are usually a one time ribbon...and has to be replaced when empty.
2nd make sure the cartridge is snapped in properly and seated, and also the printwheel lever must be snapped (pushed forward) in order for everything to be aligned. if the typewriter has a correction tape (white or clear) make sure it is not interfering with the ribbon.
Lastly the ribbon drive may be broken or out of adjustment. a minor repair.

  1. Is the daisy wheel locked in the forward position?
    1. Pull the black lever back, away from the platen.
    2. Lift out the daisy wheel and inspect it for damage; replace the daisy wheel if it is damaged.
    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

Check to see if there is a switch on the left side of keyboard for international or symbol printwheel selection.

Typing the same letters

check to see if anything is interfering with the free rotation of the printwheel, ribbon or corr. tape if improperly installed may do this. with the mach. OFF move the printwheel by hand. if it moves ok, and it still won't print wright, you will need a repair shop to fix this problem.

Make sure ribbon you have if for the typewriter you have. take ribbon off machine and type characters, you should see the small ribbon (black) part that turns the ribbon move. If not you have a problem in the printer carrier itself...

sounds like it needs a good clean. Your best bet would be to look out for a Brother service centre or at least an established typewriter repair centre. Most modern technicians will be able to get your Brother working again...Good luck!

Letter skipping

Take a look at the ribbon, making sure it is moving eack key stroke you should be able to read you typing thru the ribbon.
