Check the contacts for the battery to make sure they are clean and shiny. Then insert 4 brand new AA batteries observing the correct polarity and try again. Also check your users manual to be sure all of your setting and connection to your camera is correct.

I hope this was a help to you and good luck!

Do i need the battery adapter for my vivitar 283

The 283 and 285 require an adapter to hold the 4 AA batteries. This is because there is an available battery pack NC-3 (NiCad) that works with the Charge-15 rapid charger. Loose AA batteries cannot be used without the adapter known as AP-1. They are all over eBay and quite reasonably priced.

Where can I purchase a new or used battery holder for a Vivitar 283 flash attachment? Mine was left in too long and the batteries destroyed the contacts.

Best place for finding Vivitar 283 anything is on e-Bay, I use a gang of them doing my location photography and have several holders preloaded with batteries so when the cycle time starts to get more then I can bare I just switch out the holders.

All my stuff came off e-Bay.

Can the Vivitar 283 be used safely on Nikon Digital SLR Cameras?

I assume you're asking about the 283, not the DF-283 which is compatible with digital cameras.

As for the 283, yes, if you put an adapter such as the Wein Safe-Sync between the camera and the flash. Under no circumstances should the flash be mounted directly on the camera.

Won't turn on.

Soak the internal contacts of the battery holder with WD40 electrical spray and leave for a while say an hour it will not harm the electronics but wipe suplus off after giving further cleaning with fibre tipped pen available from most electronic firms the contacts have to be very clean as I found with my flash gun Vivitar 283 and I nearly give it up for lost after the above it is now working fine

Batteries

I use Duracell 2650 mAh rechargeable AA's with my 283 all the time. You may read that 1.2v Duracells or other rechargeables will not work because of the slightly lower voltage (alkalines are 1.5v).

I believe the problem lies not with the voltage, but is due to the slightly fatter profile of the rechargeables that causes a tight fit in the Vivitar battery pack. I find that, after inserting all four (the last will go in really tight), I need to give each cell one more firm push so that it seats properly into the battery pack.

Good luck.

Vivitar 283 flash

Please check the trigger voltage.
What, how do I do that, you said!!!!!!!!!?

Here they are:

1. Four fully charged or new batteries into 283.
2. You needs a DVM (Digital Volt Multimeter).
3. Set DVM: DC scale, higher than 10 scale.
4. Black Lead to black DVM and Red Lead to red DVM.
5. Turn ON the Vivitar 283 and wait until light turns Green.
6. Place Black Lead to Outside Silver Contact of the flash.
7. Place Red Lead to Center Silver Contact of the flash.
8. What is the voltage reading? Read the max. V.
9. Anything under 8VDC will be fine.
10. Some versions will be high.

Hope they are helpful to all photographers.

Truly,
Alexander
