Cannot open Reader on Desktop - click the icon and nothing happens

If you mean Adobe Reader, then either the shortcut has lost the information on what file it is associated with or Adobe Reader is no longer on the computer. If you recently transferred to a new computer using the Windows Transfer Wizard, the shortcut may be pointing to a different version folder or to a not yet installed program. Remember the Transfer Wizard does not install the programs and doesn't transfer the registry information about installed software from the old computer.

For Windows:
First, right click on the icon and then click on Properties. That will give you the location and name of the program it is associated with (as it was created). For example: on my Win7 32-bit machine this reads "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe". Next open the Control Panel Programs list, see if Adobe Reader is listed. (For Win7, this is Start > Control Panel > Programs. WinXP, look for the Add and remove programs section.) Open Computer (My computer) and navigate to C:\Program Files. See if you have an Adobe Folder and then the reader folder location. (If the folder exists, check for the exe file and if that full folder name matches the one for the shortcut.)

If Adobe Reader isn't installed, go to http://www.adobe.com and follow the link on the right hand side to download and install Adobe Reader. Then remove the bad shortcut since a new one will be added to the desktop.

If you have Adobe Reader installed but the shortcut isn't pointing to the correct location, you can create a new shortcut by right clicking on the exe and choosing create a shortcut. Before you do this, double click on the reader.exe and check that it does launch. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall the program.

I hope this helps.

I have 8 programs that won't work and say "they do not have a program association with it for performing this action". They say to "create an association in the folder options control panel".

Windows uses "associations" as part of its object-oriented interface.

For example, after installing Adobe Reader, there will be an "association" created, such that everytime that you double-click on a 'PDF' file, then Windows will launch Adobe Reader.

Similarly, '.doc' files will be associated with Microsoft Word,
and '.xls' files will be associated with Microsoft Excel.

> create an association in the folder options control panel

That's the correct way to "add" or "delete" a specific association.

It's strange that you don't have an association already defined;
it could be the result of a computer-virus, namely, one that has deleted that association.

When i tried to open the file it says ''this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Creat an association in the Set Associations control panel''.

Each Windows Operating System, 98, NT, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 associate files with programs. This means that the file will open with that program each time it is clicked on.
The error indicates that the file type does not have a program associated with it.
1. You do not have the program it is looking for loaded on the system
2. The program is installed but the association is broken

Google can help you with locating the program you need to open the file type you are looking for.
1. Make sure your system is showing you the extension for the file. This is the three letters following the period at the end of the file name. Example MyLetter.doc: doc is the extension.
2. Go to Google and type in a search for that extension. Example:type File extension flv, in a Google search. Notice, no period is used in the search.
3. Look in the results summary for the words Open an flv file (in your case you would substitute your extension)
4. Download and install the program associated with the file.

What program should i use to open files they dont open with internet explorer

A file is usually open by the computer only when the associated program is installed in the system. The associated program recognize the file extension and open it.

For Example :A notepad file will be open by Notepad editor untill and unless you cange it to open with other program.

Microsoft Word can open a notepad file too.

Files usually you will find or will downloaded from internet are usually .exe, .rar, .zip, mp3, .avi, pdf etc.

I recommended, you installed these few softwares

1. Adobe Flash player.

http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

2. Adobe Reader.

http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/9.x/9.2/enu/AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe

3.Jave runtime

4. Winrar

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar391.exe

Don't if you are not sure of the application to open a file.Download
"Irfanview".below is the link

It will open almost any files.

That's it.

A dvd+r disk I burnt using Nero7 will not play on my dvd player (the extention file of burnt file is .flv

Try converting the file first. Many converters are avaiable online. Assure that it can take FLV (Flash based files) and export as MPEG (or DVD standard) to maximize compatibility.

Found this in a search quickly:
AVS Video Converter is an all-in-one multimedia program for capturing, converting, editing, converting, transferring, burning DVD and movie files. It can convert FLV files to DVD, burn FLV to DVD, as well as convert FLV to all popular video file formats, and even extract MP3/WAV audio from FLV. Supports Youtube, Flash, Google FLV video files.

Good luck

Need to set an association to open a file

The first thing that you have to find out is what type of file is it. Normally if the file is not associated with any program on the computer then that means that the program is not installed. To find out the type of program that it is you can go to the link below then check the file extention. The file extention by the way is the letters after the period in the filename. EX. hello.DOC the capital letters is the file extention
