1.Cooling fans work?
2.No Signal shown on monitor?
3.Harddrive doesn't make any noise? (To explain. Harddrive is inactive. Not spinning, and the arms aren't moving back, and forth across the platters)

Suggest it's a bad power supply. A common occurrence.

Why?
1.Owner fails to keep the inside of the computer clean, and the power supply.

Dust/Dirt/Spider Webs/Lint, you name it, builds up inside. This foreign material clogs up cooling components. Specifically the Processor fan, and Heatsink, plus the power supply fan, and heatsink's inside the power supply.

Result?
Processor heats up. Takes more power to run, until eventually it turns off. (Processor's have a thermal limit. Once this thermal limit is exceeded, BIOS turns the processor off)

Power supply heats up. Fan blades and center hub collects Dust/Dirt, as well as heatsink's inside the power supply. Cooling capacity drops tremendously.

Heat = Wasted Energy. The power supply puts out more, and more power to keep up. Eventually components inside the power supply fail. They burn up. (More on this to follow)

2.Cheap power supply. Cheap construction, and cheap materials used. Pre-built computer manufacturers generally use cheaply made power supply's. Saves them money.

A.Gauge of wiring used inside is too small.
B.Electrolytic Capacitors used are of an inferior design, and of cheap quality.
C.Circuit design is below par.
D.Other components used are of low quality.

So how does a bad power supply still light-lights, and spin fans?

Bad power rail.
Personal computer power supply's put out three main voltages.
A.12 Volts
B.5 Volts
C.3.3 Volts

Electrolytic Capacitors used in a power supply are Filters. They filter the incoming AC electricity, and the rectified DC. When one or more capacitors fail, or are failing, a bad power rail results.

1.ALL the lights uses less than 1 Watt.
2.EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

A typical Processor uses 55 to 125 Watts. Depends on which processor it is.

So you see, you can have enough power to light those lights, spin fans, and even spin the harddrive motor, but not enough to turn the processor on. (Or if it does turn on, not enough to keep it running)

You can easily prove it's the power supply at fault, if you have a known, good, power supply to use for a test.
Another 300 Watt unit that has the same power cables. (Should be stated as has at LEAST the same power cables. It can have more power cables, and these just won't be used)

No processor running you get no signal to the monitor. Computer isn't working to give a signal to the monitor.

Computer is quieter than normal, because you don't hear any harddrive noise. No processor running to access the Operating System on the harddrive. (Or programs and applications)

(Windows XP is an example of an Operating System. O/S)

Just for information, this link gives details of the components inside a harddrive. Gives you more info about the Arms, and Platters I referred to above.
Just thought I would include it. It is not advertising for this website, but is included for reference.

My compaq fs7600 monitor wont turn on

Hook a spare monitor to the computer, if no change! the Video Graphics Card is suspect usually built into the motherboard. But if spare shows picture, the problem lies in the HP monitor, as a last resort change the video cord from the computer to the monitor "if possible" to rule out something simple.

The s7020d fan quite for a few seconds and then ramps up to very noisey at full speed other then replacing the fan, what can be done to make it much quieter ?

First you must be shore that is nothing is in the fan blades that can interfere with his working. Then u can clean the blades of the fan from dust. And if that does not work you must take the fan out and put some mechanism oil in the back of the fan. And is it doesn't work then try replace ing the fan.

Has a Tashiba TV, model DLP. Fan goes on & off; when on, it makes a loud noise. Is this how it is suppose to work and is there a way to get the fan to be quieter?

Depending on the TV's age. Older models use a halogen bulb to produce the light for the picture, new ones use LED's to take the place of that. If it is an older set I would lean more toward the color wheel in the DLP light engine to be the cause of the noise, mainly because it was a known issue as they get older, that and the fan speed is usually pretty constant and does not shut off. If it is a newer LED DLP, then I would lean towards the bearings in the fan having issues on the TV, if you hear the fan over the show your are watching or is much more then slightly noticeable when there is a lull in the sound of the show you are watching, I would contact Toshiba for Warranty repair.

When i turn on my HP Pavilion a1320n nothing happens. it sounds as if it is in standby mode and the fan is runing but the monitor never comes on. i can't get it to the initial dell screen where you can...

id check and reseat memory ram first. it should give you a beep sound for error. if nothing, then check video card and hard drive. you can also remove everything (ram, hard drive, cd or dvd rom) then restart and see if it gives a beep error.

Hello, i own a 7year old advantium oven everything works except the microwave, the key pad and timer shows its on but wont heat. any suggestions thanks

Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

If it sounds the same as usual or a little louder, I would suspect the magnetron or high voltage diode has failed.

If it is much quieter than usual I would suspect a bad upper door switch.

The service manual is here.

Also see this file on door switches.

LG Fridge Freezer display has CF error code

Turns out a CF ER is a Compressor Fan problem.
Had a look and the fan was not turning, although it spins freely. Apparently it's a 3 phase 12v fan. I was able to get a resistance measurement across it but didn't know what to expect.
This also explains why it seemed a bit quieter and why the water is a bit warmer sometimes. The valve for the water dispenser is right beside the fan and it's getting pretty hot in there at the moment.
