Hi there, the unit may be going into protection mode. This can be caused by many things, but the first thing to check for is dry solder joints
Comment by robotek, posted on Mar 22, 2008
If you have the unit in pieces, I would start checking about power stages, and any devices that are mounted to heatsinks for cracked or dry solder joints. It may take some time to do this, but is the only correct way to approach your problem. I am trying to find you a cct diag. Back to you soon

A cooling fan in audio gear does often do not operate until temps get to the point that they are required to. After having given you initial advice, I can only take from your feedback to me, that you have not been able to carry out even the most simple rudiments of fault finding by visually checking for dry solder joints in the output and power supply stages?
There are many things to check, I have also not been able to get a circuit diagram for you for free. You will have to pay for one.
It is understood that you have a fault!! Diagnosis of that fault is what you are asking for from FixYa. We can only give you advice. You need to then do the work!!
If you do not have any prior knowledge of analogue power supply circuits, audio output stages, or microproc control circuits, then you may need to take the unit to a repair man like myself in your area.
So good luck with that one mate!!

I read from your rejection of all good advice offered thus far, that you are expecting someone from somewhere to tell you where the button is that will reset the fault condition for you....... and if no one can tell you where this magic button is, then you should not have to pay for the advice given. The solution that I offered is on track, however, you have declared that you believe it is incorrect, and you are still looking for some magic! As this is the third time around you have rejected good advice... you should get you money back right. Well then, maybe as you have so wisely suggested.... you perhaps DO have a rodent problem!!

Hopefully better late then never, let me describe what is going on here. First, tehse shelf units attempt to get to a know condition everytime they power up. This means that you should here the CD spin and the cassette motors run. I believe that your model (I'd have to look itup to be sure) has either 3 or 5 CD storage inside which means that the whole CD mechanism also attempts to get to a known condition. Should any of these attempts fail, the unit will shutdown to prevent further damage.
The other posters are correct in that Sony does not make service manuals available to the consumer without cost. Authorized service centers pay a subscription every year to gain access to these manuals electronically and are prevented by contract from sending them to anyone.
That being said, the most common fault for these shelf systems in mhy personal experience has been the CD changer/loader that gets out of timing. This requires a rebuild of the mechanism that is relatively simple with the manual and some prior experience. Problems with the output amplifier section can also cause this. The amp problem is easily detected by taking voltage readings during the startup process.
I hope this has helped you to understand the situation better.

jmackie,
Sony is one of those companies that keeps their information tightly wrapped, so the chances of finding a free service manual are quite remote. The answers here are fair, balanced and accurate. The suggestion to take the unit to a Sony service center is consistent with my own experiences, as well.
I hope you find resolution to this issue.

Its clearly a hardware fault, parts might need to be relaced. if you still have warranty contact your dealer.
About the repairs, contact a local electronics professional for advice and repairs.
Or sony.
