Hi,
This could indicate some component overheating/damaged. I haven't worked on a monitor like yours, but on several occassions I noticed that the problem was caused by blown capacitors. This can usually be spotted if you inspect the capacitors on the logic board carefully. If they are bulging or you can see black goo "leaking" from them then they need replacing. Other than that, troubleshooting of other components on the logic board is far too complicated to describe here.
Hope this helps,
Raf

Borrow a second computer, e.g., a laptop, and a second monitor.

Does the second monitor work, when connected to your computer?
If not, then it's your computer (probably the video-adapter) that is the problem.

Lg2284 screen goes to black in a second

There is a circuit board that is failing. Sorry but it is time to buy a new monitor. If you are skilled at electronics repair you can replace the circuit board, but I have found that the price of the circuit board plut the effort of replacing it is not worth the trouble.

My monitor is a dell 2000 flat screen 20.1" turns

This is a backlight problem. The picture is there but there is no light from behind the LCD screen. It could be due to faulty capacitors, which are easy to replace. It could be a faulty Inverter transformer, which is harder to fix but he backlight controller board can usually be replaced at a reasonable price. If you have soldering experience you may be able to replace the faulty capacitors - look for capacitors with bulging tops.
Repalcing the inverter board in a job for someone with electronics experience. You can buy a universal inverter board for about £15 to £20 from e-bay.
20 inch monitors can be bought for about £100 to £150 so you need to decide whether it is economical to repair.

Monitor keeps turning off but power says it's still on

You are OK with the power cord, more likely to be failure in the power supply/Inverter board, look for bad fuse and shorterd transistors, see Dell pictures here: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Transistors should be checked out off circuits.

Screen flashes only for a split-second (as a second display for an iMac)

The inverter is faulty. If your Monitor is powered by a mains'kettle' type lead, then it MAY be repairable, provided you can find someone to do it.If you have an external power supply, then the chances are you have a separate inverter, and it is doubtful whetther you can find the fault or a replacement circuit board....which is why we have become a throw away nation !!

Monitor turns on for a couple of seconds then goes black

This problem is due to trouble in the inverter circuit which powers the lights inside the monitor. (LCD monitors require a light source so you can see the display. Your display is still there but you can't see it.) It is repairable. Usually the cause is failure of capacitors in the inverter circuit that need to be replaced. I haven't worked on this particular model so I can't give exact part numbers or values. Follow the wires that come from the backlight to the circuit board and you will see the inverter circuitry. Capacitors in that area should be checked and replaced if they are visibly swollen or have tops that have split, or if their values are out of tolerance. Although there are other possible faults, this often get the monitor going again.
