Question about Brother MFC-9840CDW Laser Printer

1 Answer

When the paper tray is installed there is a series of clicks and noises until eventually the message comes up "no paper". Checking inside the machine there is a plastic gear that turns on the left side while facing the machine front. The gear arrangement is loose and the noise is from the gears moving but not engaging. I was able to get the error message to disappear after loosing the gear but it quickly came back. Should I replace the plastic cog? Any idea of what the part is? Where can I find an equipment parts list?

Usually that happens when the tab at the inside edge of the paper tray is too tight on the paper. When you turn that gear it should lift the paper easily. Also the lever inside next to the feed roller could be out of position, it should lift easily to indicate paper present. When it is pulled forward by a paper jam it locks and stops the paper.

If this is brand new, it needs to have its ink cartridges installed and paper in its tray. It won't be happy until it's completely ready to go.

If this is brand new, then it should be under warranty. Call the manufacturer or take it back to the store.

Clicking noise with MFC-8640D another case

Usually it's because the paper is too tight in the feed tray. The paper length tab on the end away from the feed roller is too tight. If you cant rotate the gear on the paper tray and lift the paper, it's too tight for the machine to lift.

Brother MFC-9420CN Paper Jam Error message w/ loud grinding noiz

please try this

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Remove any paper trays. Inspect them for wrinkled or damaged paper.
  3. Also open the back cover of the printer if this model has one.
  4. Open any other doors that give access to the printer's paper path and to the toner or ink cartridge.
  5. If necessary, remove the toner or ink cartridge. Place it away from light/ sun light to avoid damaging it.
  6. If you find a piece of jammed paper, remove it by holding it with both hands and pulling firmly. The goal is to keep the paper from tearing. If several pieces are jammed together, try pulling out the middle piece first to loosen the jam.
  7. If the paper does tear, try rotating the roller gears manually to free the paper. Don't force anything, though. Do this step especially if the jam message comes up repeatedly without any obvious paper jam, there may be a small tear of paper inside.
  8. Ones the printer is free of paper Replace the toner or ink cartridge and paper trays, close any doors you opened and turn the printer back on.
  9. If the printer paper jam message still appears, then there is still some paper in the printer. Reinspect the paper path.
  10. see alternative if the problem is still not solved.

alternative :
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.

I cant recive any fax

Sometimes the plain paper in the tray underneath upsets the whole machine.

Open up the top of the machine, as if you were going to change the toner cartridge. Pull out the cartridge carefully to mae sure that there is not a piece of paper jameed underneath. Replace the catridge and close the top of the machine. when you close the top 'door' the machine will make a noise as if it is resetting itself - the 'jam' display may or may not clear at this point. Next, pull out the paper tray. You will need to stoop down to look into the gap where the tray normally sits. If there is a piece of paper jammed at the back this will need to be carefully removed. If you pull it out make sure there a re no fragments left int he machine - you can check this by oepning out the piece of paper removed and see if there are any pieces missing.
Finally, if all is clear, replace the paper tray (it would be worth topping up your supply of paper as the 'jam' message sometimes comes up when the machine has a low paper supply.

Hope this helps.

No paper message

I have just posted a very similar problem!!

While I do not have the solution to our problem, I discovered another paper try below where the printed paper comes out.

Close the door to block where the paper would come out if it successfully printed, and look below that, you will find that you can pull out another paper tray. Adjust the little plastic paper guides inside, and your printer will use that paper.

Temporary solution, let me know if you figured out how to fix the problem with it rolling the paper through, just reply/post back to this message. Mine was working perfectly yesterday, and just started that grinding noise today. I've only had it for a couple months, too.
