Does it have a photo cell attached to it? if so the cell may be bad, but if not then it's the bulb has gone bad, normally it is caused by sharp movements that knocks out the element. And you do occisonally get a bad bulb.

Headlights went dim replaced bulbs and they were fine. They went dim again within a couple days then went back to normal by themselves. Were fine for a couple weeks now are dim again?please help thnks

Sounds like a poor electrical connection - independent of the light bulbs. Many times the ground connection to the the steel frame / chassis becomes corroded resulting in a lowered voltage on the circuit (instead of 12V reaching the lamps - only 9 or 10 volts gets to them). Try gently tugging / shaking the wires at the lamp / wiring harness to see if the lamps get bright / dim again. This will help you narrow down where the loose connection lies. If you can't find the loose connection, you can also simply supplement the ground wire on the lamp circuit with another parallel wire with one end connected to the (-) post of the battery and the other to the ground wire on the head lamp. If it was a ground connection problem - this supplemental wire will solve the problem.

Hunt dimming fd

Ok - a couple of things, first - when a dimmer is set to minimum; zero to a barely perceptible level of light output is expected. Second, fluorescent lamps have a much shorter range of dimming that the standard incandescent lamps have. It is not unusual for a fluorescent lamp to remain off until the dimmer is at or above the half way point in the dimmer's range. Third, you can not dim a fluorescent lamp or fixture unless the lamp or fixture is specifically labeled as being "dimmable". Use of a dimmer to control brightness of fluorescent lamps and fixtures that do not clearly indicate they are designed for dimming or to control the speed of motors like those in "paddle fan & light fixtures" creates a dangerous fire hazard condition. Most CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) that readily replace the screw-in incandescent type lamps and are clearly labeled as dimmable, can be used with a standard dimmer. The traditional (non-CFL) fluorescent fixtures that have a internally mounted and hard wired internal ballast need a special dimmable ballast to operate.

Good luck!

I have a Maestro dimmer on 2 20 w hallogen bulbs and the dimmer when turn off or on dims the lights rapidlyup and down.

When you say "halogen bulbs," are you referring to MR-16 (12-Volt) lamps off a transformer, or line-voltage halogen lamps. If using the MR-16s, then the fixture doesn't qualify as "incandescent" which is what the dimmer you have is rated for, and the behavior of the transformers within the fixture can cause the types of issues you're seeing. If it is a line-voltage (120-volt) halogen then, then it could be a number of things depending upon how "rapidly" and frequent the "up and down" is. Regardless, call Lutron's tech support number at 1-800-523-9466. They're available 24/7, they won't charge you, and they can help you sort this out.

Apparent fixture problem for halogen plug

This dimmer was not made to dim a load smaller than 40VA. That halogen bulb would only have been 20VA or so.

I think that when your bulb burnt out, the dimmer over-volted the transformer and smoked it. That said, I think you have a fixture problem and, possibly, a switch problem, too.

Lutron Dimmer Not Dimming But On/Off Works

What is the dimmer rated for? Your load on the track appears to be 200 watts. A standard dimmer will burn out, you need to look on the dimmer to see what it is rated for. Did it run hot with the dimmer before you had this problem? They make dimmers for higher wattage that will do the job for you.

How many dimmers types?

Certain dimmers can control standard incandescent lamps that use 120 volts while other dimmers can control low voltage xenon or halogen light sources that use 12 or 24 volts.
