Need specific brand, model, type, code numbers from the engine !
However, 0.004" on many overhead valve engines will at least make it run. We really do need the specific numbers to know for sure. get back to me, rwvanlue

Most likely just the age of the engine. It is not uncommon to have to de-carbon the valves, head, and top of the piston in a small engine after years of use.

Craftsman 20 hp 42 in deck leaks gas into the oil pan.

could put a inline shut off valve in the fuel line and shut it off when you finish or fix it right? .
you need to replace the float the needle valve and seat ( the part that the needle valve pushes against to stop the gas inlet maintained by float level.
You need to find you engine mod# type# code# code is not important
look on overhead valve covers for these #s they are right in line wherever you find the #s if its an overhead valve engine
go to and find briggs logo and click on it and enter your #s or choose from the ones they give and match them with yours and you should be able to find the part numbers you need for this carb.and get them locally or order from them.
maybe this will help cure your issue

For models through 12 ci (first 2 #'s in model number), .005-.007 intake and .007-.009 exhaust. On a 13 ci engine .005-.007 intake and .009-.011 exhaust. I'm assuming this is a 'L' head engine and not an overhead valve. They would be different for an overhead valve and I would have to know the model and type #'s on the engine.

13.5 briggs runs rough spits & sputters

Hello rbryan492:

From your Description it Sounds like a Blown Head Gasket between the Push Tube Galley and the Cylinder, the Valve Clearance Requires Setting or the Flywheel Key is Damaged and Requires Replacing.
>>If you Require More Assistance, then
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.
Please, Do Not Hesitate, If I Missed Something or you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance.
Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Be Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
