Remove it and plug it again in another mode...if it in a slave position ...put it as a master in the cd drive place or something like this ...boot up ...and if it is not appearing look for it with the add new hardware wizard from the control panel ...this has to bring it in sight ..
also you can take a look in the device manager to see if the computer is seeing it ...
if it is not...remove the bios battery for a few seconds ...and this way you will eliminate any settings that might d that ...it might have been disabled by mistake

You may want to try this Seagate solution... Maxtor is owned by Seagate now.

https://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx

By the way, I have had very good luck by putting my failed harddrive in the freezer for 10-15 minutes and then accessing it. With the failure you have had, I wouldn't try thing until to do anything until you have the recovery software ready to grab your data. Running the harddisk may damage the drive further.

You maybe able to retrieve data from this hard drive by connecting it to an USB hard drive adapter. Then plug this adapter into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then this computer will see the adapter as an external hard drive and you can open the folders and files and copy them to the computer's hard drive or to a USB flash drive.

Maxtor manager software shows no drives

Hi,

First and foremost if you're getting power but not seeing the drive you likely have either a drive or enclosure circuitry failure.

If you have no power lights try a new power adapter.

If the drive has failed and you want the data back you will need a Data Recovery Pro to asist you, if the enclosure has failed it will be much simpler.

Step one take the drive enclosure to a PC shop(no offence to Mac techs but they stink at salvage efforts, must be too many years of promising nothing ever fails ;)). When you get there ask them to remove the hard drive from your Maxtor enclosure and pop it into a generic enclosure(looks cheap but the internals are identical in most cases). Then ask them to test the drive to see if it shows up, depending on how you formatted it they may need MacDisk to make it visable.

If it works, buy the enclosure and head home, you're done. Plug it into your Mac and go on with your day, no harm no foul.

If this fails to see the drive, then the Hard Drive itself is likely at fault, in this case reply to me with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to the closest Data Recovery Facuility with Mac capabilities to have your data retrieved,

Of course if the only data on it is still accesible on the computer and it's a dead drive, just buy a new external, head home and rerun the backups manually as in this case it's cheaper to chuck and replace the external than have it recovered.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

Hard drive connects and then disconnects quickly

Sounds like a bad solder joint or break on the circuit board. If the data on it is important, you may need to use a data retrieval service.
