Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
If your system doesn't recognize blue ray games or blue ray dvds but
still plays normal dvds and music cds your lens is dirty. I had this
problem and my factory and store warranty are up. I decided to take the
machine apart and see what I could do. This problem will start out by not automatically loading the game CD once inserted (if you have that option turned on) then intermittent freezing during a game, then finally no Disc icon on your screen when you start the machine and insert a game.
If you look online there are several videos how to take the machine apart. I opened the machine up, took out the blue ray drive and opened up the drive. Once you remove the cover from the blue ray drive, take some rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip and clean the lens. I actually used my t-shirt to wipe it and blew on the lens and it did the trick. Before you assemble everything, plug the drive in and pop in a game to see if it works (or you will have to remove all the screws again.) This should solve your problem. If your drive doesn't recognize any media, your laser might be shot.
Once you tear into it and figure out how everything works you'll realize it's not very complicated. Otherwise you'll end up spending about 150 bucks for Sony to do the same thing.
