Question about Samsung HL-S5087W DLP TV

1 Answer

No sound or video from my hl-s5087w samsung tv

I have no sound or video from my hl s5087w samsung. It has a brand new color wheel and lamp. When I turn on the tv the lamp button flashes green for about a minute and then goes out, so none of the lights are lit. However, after a short while the tv shuts off into standby mode. I hear no sound and see no video.

Could it be the light tunnel?

Hi. Yes, that cover was put on properly. It seems I am not getting any source audio or video. Could that switch itself go bad? How could I test if it is the switch.

Basically that switch can be pushed up or down. I've tried holding it both ways to see if that fixes it and nothing. Is there a way to override that switch just to test it? Thanks.

I forgot to mention that the lamp is firing up night and bright. It's just not shining through to the screen and the system shuts off. So the lamp is working. Could it be the light tunnel?

However, wouldn't I be able to at least get sound? I don't get anything at all. Thanks for your continued help with this by the way! :)

Connections are all there and fans (2) seem to be spinning. This problem was happening before the color wheel was replaced. Technician said color wheel was the problem, but obviously it is not. I replaced the color wheel myself following precise instructions (I'm not technically challenged.) :)

I was hoping that replacing the color wheel would fix it, but nothing. Still no sound or video showing up through to the screen. Could be an issue with the light tunnel? Would that prevent it from turning on? I do know that prior to it dying, the tv was having the "light tunnel shadow" on the right hand side of the screen.

OK, make sure lamp cover is fixed properly after lamp replacement.
There is safety switch under lamp cover that need to be pressed by lamp cover, that switch sends signal to system control chip, if that signal is missing, TV wont power up and shuts down because of protection activation.
Let me know further query, if any.
Thanks.

Lamp cover is in place and switch is working, ballast power supply sounds defective that provide high voltage to lamp to fire up.
I do not recommend to test/ check ballast power supply as its qualified tv tech job, please make sure that ballast supply connectors are hooked/ plugged properly.
    Thanks.

Oh great, lamp fires up and gives light, ballast supply is OK and working.
Please check fans are running in TV? if any fan is not spinning, check its connector plugged in circuit board. All fans are monitored by system control and if any fan gives error, TV will shut down.
Please recheck all connectors that were removed/ unplugged during replacement of color wheel.
    Thanks.

Any problem with Light Tunnel can affect picture quality but protection activation is some thing else that prevent TV to turn it on.
Color wheel spin is also monitored so jammed / broken color wheel can shut down TV.
Do you have service manual copy in hand to troubleshoot as manual has related info.
You can download service manual/ schematics from HERE for small fee, if required.

Samsung HL - S5087W. TV originally would not come on. I put a new lamp in and picture will start out dark, then will lighten up. What part is still in need of replacing? cooling fan? color wheel?

Shay, where did you get your lamp from? If you bought a sub-par generic lamp, then the result will be exactly what you described. Generic lamps can be found abundantly on Amazon or eBay type marketplaces... i would stay away from shopping there. I recommend a site called Discount-Merchant or SamsungParts... D-M seems to be the cheaper one for original Philips brand replacement lamps.

Make sure you are buying a Philips and not a generic or knockoff Philips.

Another good resource for troubleshooting your TV is the FixYourDLP forums... You can get lots of help there as well!

Good luck!

Hi,If you are getting a black and white picture, color discoloration or a humming high pitch sound, it will be an issue with the color wheel. The color wheel is a rotating disc that spins at high rpm and its in charge of creating the colors on your set.Found it here:http://www.discount-merchant.com/Samsung-Replacement-Color-Wheel-HLS-HLT-Series-p/samsungcolor_wheel_bp96-01579a.htm You can replace it
