I have an Acer TravelMate 4000lci with all stock parts. For the last few months I have been having problems getting this system to boot properly. My suspicion was motherboard flex damage, since when i twist it while pressing power it would power up. Regardless, 9/10 times if trying to boot any linux distro (in diagnostic mode) I would freeze up at "setting system clock" I would consider myself pretty advanced with computers, working as a supervisor at a computer repair shop. I opened up the chassis and looked for broken tracks or cracks in the mainboard. Finding nothing, I re-seated the CPU, RAM, and Mini-PCI card and tried booting up. The system ran and booted Ubuntu without a hitch. Getting ready to put the system to sleep, as I adjusted the lid I heard a static noise from the speakers then noticed the system was locked up.
I am pretty sure I am going to wind up replacing the Mainboard or CPU... or both. I think I know which of the two to start with, but I want to get another opinion from somewhere where I am not the primary teacher to people nearby. The only part that has me guessing is that once the power goes on, Windows XP and Vista run perfectly, and if the system locks up it will come back if I flex the system like on power up.
Thanks for any ideas.
If you were to log on to the
manufacturer's web site, I think you will be pleasantly surprised as
usually one is able to download, by model number, Customer
Instruction Manuals, list
of Dealers,
for spare parts and service, Driver
downloads
and
Installation Instructions
as required.
This is the best way of ensuring up to
date drivers for your system and they are free of charge!
I hope this helps.

That was pretty much my thought on the matter, I just really would have preferred to replace the CPU since I'll have to wait WAY longer to get a hold of a new mainboard, at lethal prices.. I suppose I will just start out by reinforcing my notebook case with bondo and sheet metal as to prevent this from happening again. So much for the easy way out.
