Screen Resolution How can i find out what driver i need to get a screen resolution to go above 640x480, my computer crashed and i have literally had to start from scratch, hence some of the drivers are missing, if i can download the right driver to improve the resolution i can get the computer back on line and re-download necessary drivers. The computer/tower is a Fujitsu-Siemens and the sreen is a dell i have managed to download the driver for the screen but once it is unzipped don't know where to go from there as the computer doesn't even acknowledge a monitor is installed in the device manager, so the very basic is recognised and can't update driver as the properties is not highlighted. Hope you can URGENTLY help me. Susie

The best thing you do is; if the computer is dell you can download driver from dell website you only need the some information:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

On the otherhand;
if the VGA is add on to the mainboard you need to get the model number of the card and search on to the manufacturer's website.

Susie, you know that your system working on a higher resolution , you can check it by going to:

    1. in the desktop, right click then "properties" and then;
    2. click "setting " tab
    3. in the "display" if listed " default monitor" something like that"
4 then VGA was not installed: You need to installed the driver:
    However' if otherwise;
    5. then continue to screen resolution, set the color quality and then the screen resolution set it to higher;

If you have downloaded the driver and it is zip, you unzip it just just right clicking the file and then click desktop on the right side and then click ok.
your files is in the desktop. install that driver.

its very much pretty if tell me the exact model of your system so that i can find driver for you to download. ok susie.

Are you sure you have connected a graphics card. If so you dont need any driver because the graphics card depending on the model has already the necessary driver included just like when you first bought your motherboard.

Now, if your're only using the onboard graphics( that is the graphics card of the motherboard itself), you have to check whether the graphics supports resolution higher than 640x800. On board graphics, as far as i know contains only the necessary that will output on your screen, it means the resolution should not go much higher. But, you still have to check.

For assurance and for the best picture you wanted to have(probably your'e playing high resoulution games), I suggest that you buy the necessary graphics card that is supported by the games. Example of such brand is inno3d series.

well, I guess the solution of Brod melnavz, should hopefully solve your problem. There it is the step by step solution provided to you.

However, if the problem had occured only when you reinstall XP

Ah...!!! now, ok I remember that situation. I have experienced that before. Im sure that is the same problem..

Is it when you turn on your computer and boot it up upto the windows xp screen, the screen seems not right? it cannot be explained, well maybe that's the reason youre having hard time explaining your problem here.

Im not actually sure what is causing that screen problem, maybe we could ask a more knowledgeable or experts on this matter like Melnavz. But, if you want to undo it fast so you can work already, I hope my solution would be some of help to you.

What I've done is to restore it to an earlier point. Since you are using XP there is a portion there windows xp restore in the start menu, utility section. Im not really sure of the exact way on how to get into it. Maybe you could use the RUN program and look for the Xp restore.

Now, if you are able to go there, all you have to do is to set your computer back to its earlier time. I hope there are some restore point made by the comptuter as it is default. It will take time, but, when it restarted, I hope it will already solve your screen problem.

Note: you have to choose a restore point earlier than the point where your screen doesnt work normally.

I hook up my pc to lg lcd it always says invalid format any solution

What cable connection are you using? What resolution was the computer sending to the video graphics adapter before you connected the two?

The TV can only support
VGA Resolution: 720x400, 1360x768, 640x350, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x768, 1360x768 or 1366x768
HDMI to DVI: 640x350, 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x768, 1360x768 or 1366x768

For best results you should use 1360x768.

Try resetting this when the Input is set to that for the computer. Press Menu and select Picture. Press Enter and select Screen (RGB-PC) (use the Up/Down arrows). Press Enter and select Resolution. Then press Enter and select the desired resolution. Then press Enter again.

If you like there is a Auot-config option in the Screen menu, that may set the TV properly.

If the above doesn't help, use another monitor and check the output resolution and then reconnect to the TV.

I hope this helps.

I am using ubuntu 10.04 linux operating system ,but it,s screen resolution is not good .is there any possibility to download and install any vga drivers to get better resolution

Hi,

Go to System, on the top bar, then Preferences and select Monitors.
On the Monitor Preference screen there will be different resolution settings that you can choose.
If there are any resolution settings higher than 800X600 like 1024X768 etc. select it and apply.

If there is no other settings available go to System then Administration and select Additional driver.
When the Additional drivers screen appears check if it recommends a a driver to be downloaded.
If it does, download the driver and then you will be able to get higher screen resolutions.

If there is no additional driver to download it gets a bit tricky.
You will need to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
The file will look someting like this:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Philips 190S"
ModeLine "1280x1024" 108.0 1280 1328 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 30-82
VertRefresh 56-76
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Philips 190S"
Device "Default Device"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection

SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "832x624" "800x600" "720x400" "640x480"
EndSubSection

EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

It will be wise to make a backup of this file if you are going to edit it. (xorg.conf.old)
Inside the file you will see your screen and its resolution. (Preferred mode)
You need to change the resolution, save the file and restart your session.
If all went well your resolution will be set to what you specified, if your display freaks out replace the xorg.conf file with the xorg.conf.old file.

Hope one of these options solves your problem!

Regards

How to get 1200 X800 resolution

It depends upon the notebook you use if it support the resoulution you want. You can change the resolution by display properties in control panel. Also 1280*800 is used only by widescreen desktop or laptops.

Pixels only goes to 640X480

When you cannot increase the screen resolution nor a higher color bit, this usually means the video driver has defaulted to standard VGA driver and 8 or 16 bit color.
Install or re-install the latest video driver for your model video card.
When the correct video driver is installed you will be able to change the screen resolution and 32 color bit.

I changed resolution from 640x480 to 1024x768 and all i get now is a blank screen. cannot get back in to change resolution back to 640x480

reboot the computer in "safe mode with networking" by rebooting the machine and during the manufactures name screen, tap the F8 key and you will see the muli-boot menu come up. Safe mode usually loads a resolution the video card and monitor agree on. You may have corrupt video drivers that give the black screen. While in safe mode, go online to windows update and let it scan your system, choose custom installation and look for the optional updates, these will be the hardware drivers you need to update your system. Check them all if you like and let windows install them automatically. Once done reboot normally and see if that clears the problem.

Resolution change on my lap top screen when I load my webcam

I had this problem on my PC and I tried everything from updating drivers to re installing the software and updating my graphics card but nothing seemed to work.
And then as a last resort I right clicked on the icon on my desktop and chose properties and clicked on the Compatability tab and unchecked on display settings Run in 640x480 screen resolution.
This worked and did not affect the webcam in anyway.
