I assume you want an external enclosure for this drive. Hard drives are built to standard dimensions and have the same power and data connectors, so any enclosure designed for a 3.5-inch IDE drive would work. Here's one I've bought several of for myself and others, and it's been reliable. There are many more available from many vendors. Just be sure you get one designed for IDE drives or that will take both IDE and SATA. If you get one meant for SATA only, the connectors inside won't fit your drive. Which enclosure you finally choose will depend on which you think is best (based on price, appearance, reviews, or whatever you look for), but any one will work.

Hi, you must esure the laptop is used on a flat hard surface, as the air vents are on the side and underneath. Laptops are very prone to overheating due to there contruction and design. If this is not the problem and the overheating continues, your machine will need to be looked at proffessionally.

For some reason, I see a lot of the external USB hard drives having issues. Though I have an IDE to USB external enclosure as well as a 2.5 USB enclosure, I find it more assuring to use a secondary HD installed internally to the PC.

Alternately (and probably more to your requirement), if you intend to add more hard disk space but retain your original configuration, files and data (or simply same everything except bigger) then perhaps what you can do is clone your present HD to a bigger HD and swap when done. There are many programs available for this purpose. An example is Acronis True Image. Alternately, you can do a Google for hard drive cloning software.
