Question about Viking DFSB483D

Viking DSB483D: freezer at +10F for 4 hours or more

I have a Viking DFSB483D which is roughly 2.5 years old. Suddenly it did not defrost anymore. Service has replaced the electronics, the thermocouples and the defrost thermostat. However, after all these fixes one problem remains (and it wasn't like this before): the freezer will stay at +10F for 4 hours or more, ice cream is very soft.

Any pointers highly welcome!

Fridge is no longer cool, it's warm even on the coldest setting and everything in the freezer has thawed out with same setting. fridge is 11 years old. repair or replace?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

I note this question is not over 3 hours old so this is probably a 2nd opinion.

Actually it depends on the condition of the compressor. From the symptom that I am reading the compressor is not running at all. This can be caused by a defective defrost control or defrost thermostat. It can also be caused by something as simple as a PTC relay / KliXon thermal overload on the compressor or the run capacitor for the compressor. I would at least have it evaluated by a technician before making the decision to replace it. However... if the internal material condition of the compartments and shelving is severly degraded you may want to think twice about investing roughly $150.00 in a service call and parts to get it going again if it has mechanical defrost circuit controls. The real key is for you to find out if the compressor rotor is LOCKED or not. If the compressor is not locked or GROUNDED it is probably worth the repair cost. If they tell you that you need a new compressor the parts alone will run $235.00 + freon + labor + service call. It adds up fast.

Since you did not include the model number I do not know if you have the mechanical or electronic defrost control The mechanical one is around $35.00 and the electronic one is around $85.00. If you have a unit that has all the bells and whistles the control board can run $185.00 That is why I needed a model number. Given the unit is 11 years old I am assuming it has a mechanical defrost control.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Viking refrigerator with bottom freezer always running

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.
