Sloppy shifting on a 9 speed campag record groupset

Hi I have a 9 speed campag record groupset with carbon shifters. I like the ergonomics and the positive shifting. They have probably done more than 20k. They still work but are not as crisp as they once were. Is there an accurate way of diagnosing what is needed to refurbish? At what stage should you count your losses and buy new gear?
Thanks
K

    Hi
My shifters are the ergo type with the integrated brakes/shifters(not bar end shifters) The comment was made in this category because it was the closest fit.

Thanks for the advice which would be appropriate if the cabling was old. However this is not the case.
    Thanks anyway.

Try replacing the cables first. If the cables are getting too stretched, maybe you can get more life out of your shifters with fresh cabling..

How do I fix jumping gears on rear derailleur?

I also would check if the chain is not worn out. When the lenght increases the chain links, these also can make the chain jump. Put the bike up and rotate the peddles, while shifting gears and watch if the d?railleur moves fast enoug. Perhaps even the jumping is over, because the links are not pulled out.

5th gear synchronizer shifter

sound to me like a basic sloppy shifter, did you inspect the shifter and all parts associated?
usually the synco dont stop shifts, only causes grinding
unless, it is shattered. (rare that)
it only matches speeds, so if cracked in half , you can shift by
double shifting , like racers and truckers did for years, "crash boxes"

Hi i have a 7800 dura ace groupset and i want to put a smaller chainring on the crankset to ride in the alps will my front mech still be ok to shift from a 34 teeth up to the 52 ok ....dave

That's only two teeth different than the compact cranks that are out there now. I have a 50x34 on one bike and it shifts fine. You have to be careful to use combo's that dont drop too much chain slack for the rear derailleur to take up. I never cross more than one gear past the center on my 9-speed. I don't know why I waited so long to go with compact. I love it.

You may find that your crank won't take a 34 unless you already have 110mm bolt pattern instead of 130mm. 39 teeth is usually the lower limit for 1340mm. Look around on eBay for a specific ring that works for you.

I have been given a set of Mavic NKSIUM Race wheels currently fitted with a Campag Cassette. Are these hubs Shimano compatable, as I want to fit a 8 speed Shimano Cassette Ian...

Nope. Campi and Shimano casette bodies are TOTALLY INcompatible, BUT I have had good luck with finding Campi casettes online (eBay) and having no interchange problems between my wheels and Shimano or Campi 9-speed shifters and derailleurs on several bikes. I switch wheels without concern for the other hardware.

Within Campi there may be incompatibilities, though. If your wheels have an 8-speed Campi cassette now I think you'll be ok.

I have campy record ultra shifters the rear shifter does not 'click' anymore on the upshift so i don't know when i have pushed it enough to change gear

Hi, there is a ring nut on the outside of lever where you attach it th bar that you can turn to activate the click shift, or else there is a screw, try it in different positions as you are going on guesswork and feel otherwise
