This is a link to Kenwood for your KDC-X493 manual. Look on page 13 for iPod control by hand, which references page 6 to select this mode.

Press SEARCH for 1 second. Rotate AUD (volume control knob) to select iPodCTRL. Press AUD to select. Rotate AUD to turn ON / OFF. This is how I interpreted the manual. Tim

Thank you for the feedback, as I don't happen to own one of these uints.....I'm not able to explain exactly how-to.

When you get to menu, what happens if you press AUD to select menu, then rotate AUD to search within menu?

  • Tim Swiercinsky Nov 18, 2009

It seems to me that if you were to use the stereo headphone jack from your iPod to the stereo AUX input instead of using the usb input, then select AUX 'on'....then you would be able to listen to your pod music AND have control from the pod itself. My head unit isn't as fancy as yours. That's why I use the headphone cord to AUX input myself. Just a thought.

check all your speakers and speaker wires for shorts or bare wires, make sure no speaker terminals are touching metal. if all that checks out good, you may have a bad ouput ic.

Cannot find the choice for aux input in order to attach iPod

put on standby mode. then hold in "menu" button.
go through the list by pushing the right hand trigger down. there should be an option aux1. change this to turn on and aux input is on the source option.

I just bought a Kenwood KDC-X493 and installed it in my Alero. I hooked it up to an amp and a sub and it only works with the tuner and not and Ipod or an auxilary hookup or even a cd. what is wrong.

Hello jarhead455,

It sounds like the remote terminal on your sub amp is not properly connected. The KDC-X493 has a wire to turn on a remote amp (Blue/White) and a wire for a power antenna (Blue). If the blue wire is connected to the amp remote terminal, the amp will only turn on when the tuner source on the receiver is selected. If the correct wire is connected, the problem is most likely in the receiver.

If the receiver is at fault, not under warranty, and you still want to use it, you can connect any fused 12V+ to the amp remote terminal. A simple way is to jumper a short wire between the power and remote terminals. Wire the jumper through a SPST switch conveniently located so that you can turn it ON and OFF as desired.

Hope this helps.

Need to disable bluetooth cell phone feature.

it is specifically made for iPod - iPhone. You must be near a vehicle that is accepting a call on a Kenwood.

The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X493 CD receiver was built from the ground up to accommodate an iPod® in your vehicle. This versatile stereo features a front-panel USB input for connecting and controlling your iPod, along with a 13-character display that shows off your artist and song info.

Looks like there is no way to disable Bluetooth. What you could do is borrow 5 phones and add them to the system. It will ignore any after 5 are installed.

Your manual is here and there is very little to be found with the search word 'disable', I suspect because that is what the unit is sold for.
